What if you had the opportunity to change the way people think about health, technology and the developing world – to set a stage where African health workers and technology professionals were in the lead designing systems to meet specific and urgent health care needs – where even rural villages could gather and receive critical health information and transmit that information efficiently, quickly and affordably using mobile phones, and open source software – and you could do all that for a song. Or at least in part because of the power of a song.
Youssou N’Dour believes a song can change lives. And Nas, Peter Buck of R.E. M. and Duncan Sheik are among the artists who have joined with him to release a series of remixes in support of IntraHealth OPEN -a new initiative we are launching to help put the latest advances in open source technology into the hands of Africans to solve the most critical public health issues of our day.
IntraHealth has been collaborating with African governments and private institutions to design and apply open source solutions to strengthen their ability to use health information for strategic health policy and planning.
We’ve gathered together an OPEN Council made up of pioneers in the fields of entertainment, technology, and public health to help support a new generation of eHealth workers, technology professionals and national leaders in Africa who understand, customize and apply open technologies to improve health.
To raise awareness for this initiative we are offering the OPEN Remix – a digital charity album – to everyone. You can find out more about IntraHealth OPEN and download the songs at http://www.intrahealth.org/open
As Youssou says, “Together we can do something different.”

There are so many positive comments that I have about this video. First of all, I would like to thank Youssou N’Dour for his continued support of our movement. Youssou brings with him a credibility about African issues which is definitely appreciated. And the issue that this video addresses – health care delivery in Africa, is still one of the most important issues facing Africa.
For those who have come to know those courageous people in Africa responsible for the delivery of health care to their populations, then they will know of the tremendous challenges that they have. The health care delivery that we take for granted in the “developed world” is not easily available throughout most of Africa.
The people who must do their best to deliver health care under trying circumstances in Africa simply deserve more of our support. I think that the download of music to support the work of IntraHealth is a great idea….but it is just a beginning.
Let us continue to work together AS ONE to facilitate the day when health care delivery in Africa is of the caliber as we enjoy in the “developed” world.
All the Best, debbie
