I received a warm welcome from the students of Daniels Run Elementary in Fairfax, Virginia who were ready to take action against global poverty! The children were upset to see the majority of their peers eat only a handful of rice during the Oxfam Hunger Banquet which symbolizes the distribution of wealth around the world.
They vowed to raise awareness and act locally by serving the homeless in the DC area. Students also will wear their ONE bands as a reminder to be an advocate each day for the world’s poor.

Thanks Lauren for sharing this with all of us. As I have said before in other posts similar to yours, I think that outreach efforts such as these to children are very important & very effective in getting the message of ONE to the grassroots, to the “Heart of America” (smile).
I encourage the students of the Daniels Run Elementary School not only to reach out to the poor in their area but to find ways to get more involved in eliminating real poverty around the world.
If anyone at their school or elsewhere would like some ideas on how to get further involved with projects to help eliminate extreme poverty in our world, please check out thebsite below for a group of HIV+ women & their families who live in abject poverty in Uganda and who should be familiar to everyONE at this site for our contact info.

Indoctrination of the youth. I’d be all over my child’s teacher, principle, super, and the school board. Why? Not only are you pushing for socialistic principles in our country, you had —children— “VOW” to….I’m curious, did you get permission slips from parents before having their children vow to an organizations’s principles? Did the parents know?
When the day comes that this happens to my child, I’m going to find the person that had my child “vow” to do something. We’re going to have a one-sided screaming match….on the spot. I won’t stop until that person is pale white and visibly trembling in fear. How dare I? How dare THEM !!!

I would have to agree with Steve B. If they were forcing this indoctrination upon my child, I would be quite upset. I however, would act in a passive nature and silently accept my child’s fate. Later I would have a decent talk with my child, tell him what horrible thing he had agreed to, and see if he wanted to truly accept it.
Steve B. what would you do if you couldn’t find this abomination, would you remove your child from school, would you sue the school? Your forward options restrict your ways to act. And what is yelling at a well dressed man doing his job going to do, other then make him need to change his pants? He still makes money lying to your child, and will continue doing so as long as he makes his money. You need to set up a committee to discuss and decide what to do about these irrational actions.

Hey there Lamaar,
Sorry I haven’t been around for a while. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough that you’ll browse back by this way and we can revive this dead thread. Somehow, 60+ hour work weeks have the ability to kill my desire to do anything but spend time with the wife and kid, eat, and sleep.
You have the right to act in a passive nature and (this part blows my mind…but hey, like you said, it’s YOUR child…) silently accept your child’s fate. I refuse to do so. As I’m sure you know, I live by a different set of principles.
I honestly wouldn’t sue the school district. I personally feel that that type of reaction to be little more that hurting someone elses child. As I’ve made known, I personally wouldn’t. Personallities and opinions differ. My wife and I are thinking about homeschooling to be honest.
What would I do if I couldn’t find this person? Lamaar, in today’s information(al) age, that’s not really possible. Almost any moke with a computer and a name or two can find what their looking for and social engineering is a wonderful tool. It really wouldn’t be that hard to drive down to the school, speak with the secratary, and get an organization’s name and the names of a couple of speakers. Ask a child the right questions in the right way and you’ll get the right answers eventually. Do a little computer digging and viola! Name’s, addresses, phone numbers, etc., etc., etc. I’m sure you can input the rest.
As far as the committee thing goes, if you choose to run your life by committee, again, it’s your right. I’ll be over here—-> ….getting things done.
