Record Number of Elected Officials Sign Budget Letters

By Chris Scott

This year, ONE worked with the U.S. Global Leadership Campaign (USGLC) in their efforts to garner Congressional support for bipartisan letters asking President-elect Obama to make greater investments in diplomacy and development. Today the USGLC announced that a record 217 members of Congress signed on to the letters pledging their support for a robust U.S. International Affairs Budget. This includes 51 Senators and 166 Representatives (you can see the full list here).

As we keep you updated on day-to-day developments in the Obama team’s transition process, strong grassroots support will be needed to ensure Congress and the president-elect provide greater foreign aid. With the help of ONE members and activists across the United States, the USGLC has mounted a very successful campaign to seek broad bipartisan support from our elected officials in the fight against extreme poverty.

ONE is on the right track. One way to fight the hunger and poverty is to pay the farmers and landowners to produce instead of paying them NOT to produce.

Second: Take all commodities off the speculative market. Look at what happened to gas when speculation eased due to the recession and look at what is happening when a rumor is cast that the Saudia’s plan on cutting production; immediately the price of oil increases.

Commodities are a need for every person on this little planet we live on, speculators have no business reaping gigantic rewards causing the ordinary citizens to do without.

Great job everyone! It would be wonderful to bring those women and children in those camps into modern civilzation wouldn’t it? Is it possible? Look how they still live……….And to think, I don’t even like to go camping…….The things they went through are unimaginable, I can’t even fathom the terrible things the suvivors wittnessed……… Do they still live like herds of animals? All together in a small space surrounded by armed guards to protect them? Safe but just existing? I live in America and have never been to Darfur so of course I don’t know anything except what is fed to me through the media……………I will stay tuned………………..

    Hello fellow ONE member,
I appreciate Bono speaking out on behalf of the worlds poor and sick. Don’t forget that the number one question asked Obama was “Will you legalize marijuana?”. Think about the benefits that medical cannabis can have on the millions of suffering Africans. I am very disturbed when I hear that UN Police are using international aid money to persecute cannabis growers in Africa and destroy such an important beneficial crop. Bono has enormous influence on UN leaders, and some of the world’s most powerful people. Please don’t think for a moment that by removing cannabis the UN is in any way helping the poor people of Africa or any other continent. This is a grave injustice, and I’m sure the sick and dying Africans effected by such laws would agree. The cannabis plant can help to provide food, clothing, shelter, safe medicine, and eco-friendly fuel. If the One Campaign really wants to help the poor, we should let them grow hemp, and if we must get involved, help them succeed in taking advantage of the many benefits of the hemp industry.
I hope Bono keeps up the good work, and helps to stop the bad work.
    Thanx. www.nycamp.org
