The children of Waples Mill Elementary School SACC (School Age Child Care) program fought global hunger as ONE last week in Oakton, VA! Grades K-6 participated in an Oxfam Hunger Banquet which stimulated a great discussion about the injustice of poverty. The students ages 5-12 were outraged that not all boys and girls their ages had the opportunity to go to school in the developing world.
The event ended with a “white band ceremony” where each child made a commitment to fight global poverty and received a ONE band.

As a former teacher, I am always heartened when I see efforts like this to reach young people with the message of ONE.
Young people have the optimism & enthusiasm to take an idea like ending poverty in the world and then find ways in which they can contribute to a final positive outcome for the world’s poor. They are not jaded by all the hard work that it takes to achieve this outcome but rely on their POSITIVE VISION to lead them forward.
My only hope is that this Oxfam Hunger Banquet will not end up being a one time event but that this event will be the building block to a sustained effort with these students & their school to make extreme poverty history!
On a similiar note, I have been invited to speak before at local school next Friday regarding my work with the women of the MPWN and our larger movement to end AIDS & extreme poverty in our world.
I’ll send y’all the info on my presentation and hopefully it will also appear here in the ONE Blog.~

It makes me a bit sick to think that people actually indoctrinate children in such a manner. Having the older kids participate if they choose is fine as they are generally old enough to think for themselves. As a parent, had this happened in my kids school, I would have bent the ear of the principle, super intendent, school board, and who ever came up with the idea of including children that are too young to think for themselves.
This doesn’t sound like a fair and balanced agenda though, was there a discussion about fairness to all, how to handle money, the greatness of this country, what made it great, etc., etc.?
