Fair Trade Month Wraps Up

To all the ONE volunteers and activists who’ve worked tirelessly around our ONE Vote ’08 efforts this (very) long election season, thank you. Each one of you have made invaluable contributions to our effort to make sure EVERY presidential candidate spoke up about their plans to combat global poverty and disease. By holding our elected officials accountable, we’ve ensured that the issues ONE cares so passionately about will be aggressively and vigorously addressed. The 2008 presidential election may be over, but our work to end global poverty is only beginning.

Below is a video of ONE organizer Matthew Bartlett speaking with John McCain a few days ago at his last town hall meeting in New Hampshire as a presidential candidate. It aired on CNN and Matthew’s impassioned and articulate message is spot on. Congrats Matthew and all of our ONE Vote ’08 activists.

As a regular poster & contributor at a Fair Trade website, we have explo(red) many times over that whole area of Fair Trade Certification and of how that process can often be ostracising for those in poor countries that do not have the money available to go through the rigorous Fair Trade standards to get the right to attach the logo above to their products.

As this is not the forum to discuss the pros & cons of the fair trade certification process, I will say that while I support the fact that we do need standards for what we label “fair trade”, the lack of the label above should not automatically disincline us from buying from groups who are using fair trade principles but can’t afford the fair trade logo.

One such group is the one which I am connected with.

ALL the money raised from the sale of the items at the MPWN website goes directly back to the women in Uganda, who are all HIV+, to bolster their meager incomes to take care of their children.

That 100% return on your dollar spent to the woman who produces the item that you buy at our website is about as close to fair trade as you can get!

Hope to see some of our ONE supporters visiting our website soon and considering purchases from there for the Holidays.

Our website was the dream of our own Agnes Nyamayarwo and the money raised goes to help the HIV+ women that she works with in Uganda.

    All in the ONE Family….

    LIVING POSITIVELY, debbie :)

Check out Remedy Roasting Company, another great business selling “far trade” coffee made by farmers that cant afford the certification.
