The October 7th debate between Senators Obama and McCain at Belmont University in Nashville will be a town-hall format in which the candidates will have to field questions on any topic from the audience and the internet. That gives you a really unique opportunity to submit your own ONE Questions for consideration. You can do so by following this link to the MySpace “My Debates” forum:
http://www.myspace.com/mydebates
In the last 2 weeks, we’ve gotten an astounding 120,463 signatures for our “Just ONE Question” campaign, demonstrating that well over our goal of 100,000 Americans believe global poverty is a critical issue Obama and McCain should address in a major media forum.
We hand-delivered about 103,000 of those signatures to debate moderator Jim Lehrer’s office in Arlington in advance of the debate. We’re disappointed Lehrer didn’t ask our question, but our momentum is still going strong and now we’re shifting focus to the next debate: October 7th in Nashville, moderated by Tom Brokaw.

At the very least, global poverty deserves global dialogue. Raise your voices in debate.
October 1, 2008 at 6:59 pm
Please address the issue of global poverty with the candidates, their thoughts
and possible plans for eliminating it.
Much appreciation…
October 1, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Please ask them about measurable goals and specific plans to combat poverty. Further more address helping children in poor nations who are subject to not only disease and starvation, but those who survive are often victims of trafficing and slavery. Also, please ask them about the Biden-Hatch Bill to protect kids (many poor) in the USA.
October 1, 2008 at 7:01 pm
As we are seeing in the recent horrifying domestic economic news, the american economy is linked with the global ecomony. By dealing with issues of global poverty we make allies and in turn have countries on our side who can help us as we help them.
October 1, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Dear Tom Brokaw; I would like one question answered and that is if either candidate is willing to sign the Kyoto or a similar new treaty concerning Global Warming. That is what is of utmost importance to me. Neither candidate has taken a position on this as far as I know, and I would like that to change. Thank you
October 1, 2008 at 7:16 pm
The U.S. needs to take a proactive approach to helping end global poverty. It is our responsibility as a world superpower. Please be sure to address this issue in upcoming presidential debates.

October 1, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Mr. Brokaw,
Please ask our candidates if they are committed with ONE to help end global poverty. To help end the suffering of Africans stricken with AIDS, by getting them the medications needed. To help end horrible suffering due to hunger around the world. America can be the Angel that the rest of the world needs. What will you, as our next President do help us be that Angel?
October 1, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Please address the critical issue of global poverty in your debates. Thank you.
October 1, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I would like to know what each candidate plans to do about global literacy rates.
October 1, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Mr. Brokaw,
We NEED our candidates to address the issue of Global Poverty, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Clean Drinking Water, Education and the many other issues that are devastating communities, not just in poverty stricken countries, but some of our own communities here in America. Please ask this question, as it is a very important issue that needs to addressed by our Senators. Sincerely, Michele Polzer Charlotte NC

Dear, Mr. Brokaw…..I plead with you to, PLEASE, speak to the issue of global poverty with the candidates. We need to know their thoughts, their views, their commitments, and their CONCRETE ideas as to how we can, once and for all, obliterate Global Poverty. No child should go to bed hungry. No parent should have to see their child go without food because they cannot give them nourishment for their starving bodies or clean water for their parched throats. Thanking you, in advance, for bringing this matter to the forefront, highlighting it so it will not be overlooked by the ‘Powers That Be’ ….. Most sincerely, Karen Bellerson (Chandler, AZ)
October 1, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Do you as an Human being individial Presidential Candidate have a concern about ending global poverty in third world countries. If so, what would you do to prevent continuence of extreme poberty and make a difference in this world.
October 1, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Mr. Brokaw,
Please ask our candidates what they will do to end the world food crisis and feed the starving.
October 1, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Why can’t we take the Free Bailout of the Failed Banking System and WalLStreet (caused by the Repulblican’s dismanteling of oversight) and redirect 700 Blilion dollars in a National Healthcare for all U.S. citizens? Stop supporting Big Business greed and failures. Through the crooks in jail!
I demand takeing care of the less fornate over the +$14,000. per minute CEO pay.
Put a large Penalty and Finance charge on this Bailout, Just as they do to us U.S. citizens asking for credit. This should not be a Free Bailout, Make it a High Interest Loan.
October 1, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I’m very interested in knowing the candidates’ stance on the Millennium Development Goals – the global pledge made in 2000 to halve extreme poverty and global disease by 2015, accomplished by committing 1% of their country’s budget to this cause. . The next president will need to carry out this pledge because it will directly impact the lives of hundreds of millions of world’s poorest people. The decision has already been made before them, but I’d like to know if either candidate actually plans to carry through with the 1%.
October 1, 2008 at 8:16 pm
PLEASE ASK BOTH OBAMA AND McCAIN HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT GLOBAL HUGER AND POVERTY AND WHAT THERE PLANS ARE TO BRING AID TO THE PLACES THAT NEED IT THE MOST. LIFE IS TO SHORT TO WORRY ABOUT ONES SELF IF WE CAN HELP THE PEOPL THAT NEED IT PEOPLE WOULD BE ALOT HAPPYER AND WILLING TO DO THE SAME IF THE TIME EVER CAME

36 Billon dollars in Wall Street Christmas bonuses ALONE- we can feed the worlds hungry
October 1, 2008 at 8:30 pm
there’s a whole world of people who are in dire straits. Suffering starvation, pestilence, disease,
poverty without end, despots, genocide and everyday to them is the apocolypse. These poor,
indigent people, regardless of color, religion or philosophy need the help of those of us who have
the means and the power to assist. In his poem, ” a Pssalm of Life” Longfellow wrote,”Not enjoyment, and not sorrow Iss our destined end or way; But to act, the each tomorrow Find us farther than today.” You can help by making certain everyone knows how desperate are the
forsaken in Africa, Asia, South America, and, yes, America. Act while you can help provoke change. You have the voice that will be heard. Don’t fail all our brothers and sisters. Thank
you. Ron Hootman
October 1, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Please ask both candidates, global hunger is more than an issue, it is a child, a parent, a friend that goes without food in a world where that should not be permissable. We fight for the idea that we can eliminate terrorists when in truth unless people can feed themselves, their children and rise above poverty they will never understand that they can stand and be counted. What will you do?
October 1, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Dear Mr. Lehrer,
Please ask both candidates how they will address the critical issue of global hunger. Terrorism cannot be eliminated until people have access to sufficient food for themselves and their children.
October 1, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Please request that the candidates discuss the issue of global poverty and its effect on world peace (which doesn’t quite exist yet). Also ask the candidates how they would deal with poverty, hunger and homelessness in the United States.
October 1, 2008 at 8:52 pm
During last debate the candidates were asked what the current financial bailout will do to affect their priorites during their tenure. Both candidates replied what priorities they would still put up front. Please ask the candidates where the critical issue of global poverty is in their list of important issues. Please ask them if the alleviating of global poverty would in any way make their other priorities such as our two war efforts and rebuilding efforts in the middle east any easier and quicker to deal with. Would this help redeem our country in the eyes of the world as a leader in promoting democracy and freedom for all peoples? Perhaps if the candidates can look at the ending of global poverty in that light, they may be able to push it more to the forfront.
October 1, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Please do everything in your power to fight global poverty, so people around the world can have a feeling of hope and courage. It’s not right that we have people living in extreme poverty in today’s world.
October 1, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw & USA presidential candidates; Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain,
I appreciate all of your efforts to make this a better country and a better world. Please address what you will do to make a difference in dealing with suffering, disease, poverty, hunger and lack of clean water around the world with special emphasis on how to impact these issues in the USA. How will you adress these struggles at home and abroad?
Thank you,

October 1, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Mr. Brokaw,
Knowing you are a man of conscience and being aware that most of our world lives in need of the basics in life, I ask that you address the issue of global poverty when you interview our presidential candidates on October 7th.
October 1, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Mr. Brokaw—you sir, are fortunate enough to be in a position to ask the BIG questions as the collective voice of the people–so PLEASE,STOP WHISPERING AND START SHOUTING!! Life is short, but there’s always enough time to do the right thing. Thank you. Good night and good luck.
October 1, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw
It is with the utmost concern for the poor that are with with us in the greater world community that I ask that at least ONE question concerning GLOBAL poverty be asked at the next debate that you moderate. We as the richest nation on earth have a moral obligation to not only be engaged but to lead the fight to eradicate GLOBAL poverty.
Thank you for your consideration of this important issue!

Since my travels to Africa, I have become 150% dedicated in raising awareness for global poverty & disease. Please…for the plight of many who can’t speak for themselves….Ask the question about what the candidates plan to do about fighting global poverty & disease!!!!
Thank YOU & God Bless!
October 1, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw:
At the next presidential debate, please ask Senators McCain and Obama what they intend to do about the travesty of global poverty.
Thank you.
October 1, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw….imagine the fear, the pain, the unbearable living conditions of children around the world because of poverty. Every child should have hope for their future. With ONE question…we can make a difference. Those children need you to ask that quesiton, because they deserve an answer. On October 7, please ask our presidential candidates to answer the question; how do they plan on ending global poverty. I sincerely thank you.
October 1, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw,
I am an admirer of your book about the Greatest Generation. My generation is very concerned with how the U.S. government is going to continue to address the issue of global poverty. Please ask Senators McCain and Obama what course of action they will take during their presidency to ensure that America continues to uphold the agreement of the Millenium Development Goals. Thank you.
October 1, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw,
You have appeared to me to fairly neutral in your reporting and not excessively leaning to the right or left. Please pose the question of tying global poverty and a new economic reknewal in the United States through jobs created by focusing on green technology. Through further education of our own
countrymen, an emphasis on bio-fuels: through algae and even corn, wind/wave farms, etc. the good ole
“American” ingenuiety could help turn this downward spiral of global economics into a force of peaceful and humanitarian aid to those most needing it globalling.
Thank you for reading this if you really are.
October 1, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Let the people who are trying desperately to problem solve and meet the needs of others policy their own efforts . They are more than capable of providing accountings of monies used be accountable to God if he chooses and the United States if you really need it.. It is time for active solution oriented individuals/groups to be able to freely do what God has willed for them to get done. He didn’t ask us to ask congress first, He said to do these things. With all do respect, you are in our way Washington as usual. You have failed…in your efforts when you see 1 starving child. You have failed in your efforts when you fire 1 missle. You have failed and you probably never cared anyways. God does not fail. Quit hiding behind images of politics as usual. Admitt and truely submitt to God and be lovingly led by the Holy Spirit. Your faces are not hidden, You are not in that much control and you know it. God said to be stewards of this planet, help the needy and feed the poor and take care of the sick and foreigner. What are you doing up there on Capital Hill? Are your policy making, amendments and bill passing activities putting food into an innocent child’s belly today? These “free” flowing actions come before gas, trade agreements free or not, whatever, blah blah and etc….etc…
I love you all I do……
I am not anti-government , I love order and leadership.
I love and see passionate groups fighting for the rights of the helpless. Why are their requests be delayed and not honored immediately. Why are they even having to ask you to include it in any debateable issue? Are any of you personally Washington lobbying for your own personal needs to be met today with your family? To get some votes in the House for permission to release aid for you to have dinner and provide immunizations and housing for you and your family? Are you putting your personal needs on the ticket?
Sounds crazy dosen’t it. You know it does.
God will not forget your “blind” eye to the immediate needs of others. And your actions and decisions that have “nothing” to do with his plan for mankind” a species. I will hope it was meant for man is kind. I pray you embrace that. I also pray you stop thinking you are doing the right thing and God wanted you to go to war to bring freedom . War is not free . Maybe as a part of the evolution of man he has to get that…finally and stop choosing violent things in the name of………are you out of you flipping mind?????? Creator of living things all things living purpose to be alive and in motion wants the likes of you to destroy and take away what he has made himself??????
Again I must ask you are any of you out of your flipping minds?????
Each and every person who has any access or any ability or persuasion or decision making ability or even can actually get 5 minutes with the president. STOP now all activities actions, concerns or cares for anything that has to do with destruction in the name of peace…. Peace is not brought through anything destructive. Fear ,loss of life.and depression and grief…that is not peace. Don’t mistake a woman or man’s weary spirit as peace.
You cannot be that deluded with money or wealth…..you all go to church so even if you don’t know Jesus you’ve heard about him and know what he likes and dosen’t…Bibles aren’t hidden. You know there are Angels,,,you ask him for them and his and their protection…..
You have asked Jesus the Christ to protect you from and in the midst of and in the name of destruction. He would never want one soul in harms way. never. You should have and asked for us all to pray for dis-obediant un-Godly leaderships and to ask the Lord to remove anyone who has harm in there hearts for another.
I know alot of you have and do.
Mission: Stop working on and working for things that don’t meet immediate needs. Now. Quit “honoring” and playing diplomat. okay it’s nice and feels great fine….get the foods, medicines and housing together wherever and encourage and incite other leaders whether they be government officials or not to organize and apply efforts towards helping each other. period nothing anymore fancier than that….other countries certainly will not refuse help for their people and if those people are corrupt put all resources in the hands of Gods people and missions. They will most definitely with joyfullness make sure the needs are met and supplies are distributed….basic accounting….that’s all don’t make them scramble in desperation to try and put together supplies they need to get to others …they see the hunger and helplessness, domestic and abroad.
You must see peace in this effort and pray God forgive us, God will Bless us with His favor and Grace in these efforts. Please consider doing the right thing even if you don’t see yourself involved in this effort or making the news or getting any public % approval blah blahs do you actually need this???? no….truth is you need to make sure God is approved with you and happy with you. Not people…alll people need to have this understanding. You who have the ability release the money, food etc…..do this ….release it to those now. In Jesus name…You know they are the churches and non-profits, charities….etc….be careful of funneling monies to popular cure research organizations….I beleive you know that either A. they have the cure and need to keep the money coming and maybe you have some…or B….maybe the disease researching business is a little out of budget….let’s believe God for divine health I do. Healing and miracles. I beieive he can and does handle all of these things himself. Prayer and humble our hearts for all that we depend on Him for…thank you Jesus. I love you…thank you. Please help all people who are in positions now to immediate make these changes and actions to get the natural needs met for others…Thank you Jesus because you now who they are and what their needs and wants are….please reveal your heart to everyone so that they may have and know what’s on your heart and what you want. Thank you and I love you, Amen.
P.S. Please bring out in all people the truth of who and what they are in your Kingdom Christ .
Please Please Please Please Please Jesus shine your Glorious light in the heart of mankind and all created things. Please Please…..thank you and please……

Mr. Brokaw
When you interview Senators McCain and Obama, please ask them what their plan is for ending the war with Iraq, and bringing the troops HOME!
October 1, 2008 at 11:12 pm
In light of the fiscal crisis that has happened in the US and impacted the rest of the world, and the poverty in America and even more so in many nations of the world; I would like Senator McCain to explain why he and many members of his party continue to incest on permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest five percent of Americans?
October 1, 2008 at 11:16 pm
As usual it looks like the media’s representative is interested in asking questions what the media’s bosses want to, not that what people wants. What a shameful situation for USA? Thanks to the internet, I am now able to watch international TV and have acess to all internation reporting which is so different from our Stereo type journalism and the lousy report we used to watch on our TV. Thank God! now I rarely watch our TV and have stoped subscribing to any newspaper except a local one which I never read, but to help a student.
October 1, 2008 at 11:36 pm
What is your plan for poverty in Africa?
October 2, 2008 at 1:10 am
Dearest Mr. Brokaw,
I praise God for your integrity and humbly ask in Jesus name that you please ask the candidates what is in their hearts regarding world poverty, hungry children and parents, clean water, child prostitution, and eradication of known curable diseases.
God’s will be done.
October 2, 2008 at 1:43 am
dear mr. Brokaw,
I understand that the economy issue is the issue on everyone’s mind right now, but there have been people starving to death and dying of preventable disease’s for a long time now and we need to know what the new president of the united states of America is going to do about it. So PLEASE present the question to the canidates so that we all can see where they stand on this horrific problem and what they intend to do about it.
October 2, 2008 at 2:13 am
Mr. Brokaw,
I am curious to know what the next leader of the United States of America thinks about the Millennium Development Goals - the global pledge made in 2000 to halve extreme poverty and global disease by 2015. The goal is bold and deserves being addressed in such a forum as the one you will be facilitating. Please make the time to ask just ONE question about extreme poverty - in our nation and in our world.
Sincerely,
Jared Enyart
October 2, 2008 at 2:42 am
in order to leave a more open ended reply, ask the candidates (both prez and vice-prez) what international issues need to be addressed immediately, and in what order of importance, and WHY(?).
October 2, 2008 at 3:08 am
To my mind there is nothing known as global poverty, for the man has been so configured by the Almighty as per environs just like fruit, vegetables and esp. flowers. The species are different and no two varities are alike. Man as per his Karma, may be born in a set circumstance. One can ofcourse be rich and yet terminate one self in suicide being most unhappy with one’s environs and another may be glued on to one’s life in the circumstance most inhuman but want to hang on to it under whatever conditions. So is a nation, rich or poor as per its Karmas and the cycle goes on unabated. What therefore is the need to change one’s Karmas through preventing the man from becoming poor or unhappy. This is feasible through birth of a genetically possessed human and preventing the dispossessed. In other words, a race that is at peace with itself and content. In India the slogan as per your theme shall imply ‘Garibi Hatao’ but as per the need shall boil down to ‘Garib Hatao’. Bottom line being to remove the poor from the midst of mankind and not poverty. This would be discriminatory, Hitlerian and thus heavens shall hurtle downwards but then no two people have been made so alike by The Almighty itself however one may brood. The tiger when it devours its pray provides it ‘Moksha’ that is emancipation with the sanction of The Almighty. There is no permanence even in continuity and therefore we need to stop looking for interim solutions.

Seems to me that instead of Alaskans receiving over $2,000 a year per resident, which they do, from oil companies and their state, that the lower 48 should be receiving the same, especially the rest of the oil producing states’ citizens from hurricane damaged areas, whose citizens get nada, zip, nothing. If Alaska is so great, why do the citizens have to be PAID to live there??? And, if the oil companies are paying Alaskans all this money, aren’t we paying them by the increased prices at the pump?? How about sending all that Alaskan payola to the poverty stricken areas in the lower 48 states, or are we the United States of Alaska, and NOT the UNITED States of America??? Is it legal for Alaskans to be receiving this money when no other oil producing states’ citizens do? All that money should be going to rebuild wild fire areas and hurricane stricken cities and towns, not to fuel helicopters to shoot wildlife…how disgusting.
October 2, 2008 at 8:46 am
For years the United States of America has made great efforts to spread democracy around the world. Despite good intentions, this has at times put us in opposition to many nations and people groups. I would like to know if either of the candidates intends to spread peace and good will around the world. A good way to do that would be to champion the need to end extreme poverty.
October 2, 2008 at 9:12 am
ON BEHALF ON MILLIONS OF VOICELESS, UNDERNOURISHED HUMANS, PLEASE ASK THE CANDIDATES “WHERE SHOULD THE U.S. POSITION ITSELF, IN THE WORLD’S EYES, REGARDING THIRD WORLD POVERTY?”
October 2, 2008 at 9:16 am
Some people argue that given our country’s current economic problems, America either cannot or should not address the issue of third world poverty during the next four years. Do you agree or disagree, and why?
October 2, 2008 at 9:21 am
From a small Episcopal Church 25 mile west of Philadelphia, Pa., we were not able to travel to Africa, however, we were able to travel to El Salvador this past summer and do mission work in two extremely poor villages. We let the people in these villages know that Americans have not forgotten them and made a pledge to support their schools and children. If a small congregation from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania can make a difference in the world, I would like to hear the candidates express what they are willing to pledge to support the Millenium Development Goals. Will the U.S. support 0.7% of our budget to end extreme poverty? According to the World Health Organization, 22,000 people die each day from poverty related caused, most of which can be prevented. I would like to hear the candidates position on these important issues.
I am a “ONE” Episcopalian

Global poverty is such a curable disease in so many nations around the world. Please ask our presidential candidates not only how, but IF they plan to work at solving this global crisis. Many of us understand this is not a problem that will go away overnight; we also understand that there are many obstacles in the way, such as corrupt governments and the greed of big corporations. Evil is everywhere, and those who work for good understand that; but where good CAN be done, good MUST be done, and it is imperative that we save the lives that we can. Mr. Brokav, I am a realist. I understand the enormous pressure our candidates are under as Senators, as Governor and as potential world leaders. But the truth of the matter is it would take so little money to make such a big difference in the lives of the people of some of these poverty stricken countries that it would truly be a travesty to do nothing. I have framed on my wall a small portion of an article written by Nancy Gibbs in 2005 for “Time” Magazine referring to Bill and Melinda Gates and Bono when they were named Persons of the Year.
“This is not about pity. It’s more about passion. Pity sees suffering and wants to ease the pain; passion sees injustice and wants to settle the score. Pity implores the powerful to pay attention; passion warns them about what will happen if they don’t. The risk of pity is that it kills with kindness; the promise of passion is that it builds on the hope that the poor are fully capable of helping themselves if given the chance.”
Mr. Brokaw, I could go on, but you get the idea, and I’m almost certain you read the article. While I know there are the Bill and Melinda Gates’ and Bono’s of the world out there working to change the world, and it seems that there are missionaries abound, it is simply never enough without the promise of the passion of the American government and therefore its people behind it. I implore you to ask the candidates what they plan to do to take that brave first step to help us end global poverty and suffering.

What is your plan for Early Childhood Education?
I mean Pre-K to Fifth Grade.
October 2, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Once and for all please address the issue of global poverty. The politicians need to put their heads together to find the answer for this miserable problem., enough is enough.
October 2, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I am more concerned about World Poverty and what will be done to keep the babies from starving to death!…while in America the bakeries and other eat out places throw food away that is good like day old doughnuts or bread come on now …we will be judge!
October 2, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I am concerned about poverty and health issues in Africa, and also in Haiti! Haiti’s devastation from the hurricanes and tropical storms this year, (caused or at least affected by global warming), is similar to the immediate aftermath of the Katrina Hurricane to those who stayed in New Orleans! The deforestation caused by lack of other fuels to prepare their meager food items, has caused terrible flooding with many people still stranded with no water, food, or access to health care.
I would like our presidential candidates to explain how they would help our neighbor in our own hemisphere to develop the necessary infrastructure and economic necessities instead of only supplying them with military aid, which only contributes to the political unrest!
October 2, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I would like for the to address what they can do to legalize so many people that are already living here in the USA iligally!!! Becuase they are people who just want to work for a better future!!!
October 2, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Dear Mr. Brokaw,
While I am concerned about extreme global poverty, and would like you to address the 2 Senators on what their plan of action is there, I also would like you to address the economy in America, and how they plan to stregthen it. It is getting harder, and harder to find a job in this country, and even the low paying jobs are not hiring. Would you please address this subject.
Thank You, Robyn Korol

There is no doubt that global poverty and hunger speaks to the very essence of our humanity — our care, concern and empathy for others. At the same time, the issues of poverty and hunger, as well as diminishing natural resources and scarcity, are at the very heart of violence and instability, as people across the globe struggle to meet their needs and the needs of their families.
As a nation of wealth and abundance, our leaders should be talking about these global issues and the important role the US must play in meeting the needs of others. It is our responsibility and ongoing committment to world peace.
Please ask: What role does each candidate envision that we, as a nation, officially take with regard to ending world hunger, poverty, and providing education and training for future generations to ensure sustainability and self sufficiency?

Would you cut the funding on arms and War on Terrorism and use it for fight against global poverty instead?

To heck with people all over the world, we have a bunch of people in the good USA how need who dont want to destroy our culture. We cant afford to be the world’s policeman or monther. We have needs at home and cant afford to care for everyone, expecially people that want to attack what we stand for.

Global poverty more often than not a result of globalism and outside intervention. Although I respect your mission I feel programs like this are unnecessary and show a lack of understanding for the economic emergency our country is in. The United States was not created to be the global police/nanny and can hardly afford to tackle our own problems with poverty. I would hope that people are more concerned with issues here in the US with the economy and corrupt bureaucracies that have our nation on the verge of total collapse.

How can America lead the fight to end global poverty?

I am so disapointed with what Biden said last night about global poverty, when he said he and Obama would have to delay an increase in aid to help children get into school, end malaria, and TB etc. Fact: The cost of helping poor countries is microscopic in size compared to the money needed to address economic and social problems in the US. That’s why we can afford to stop disease abroad while **at the same time** helping people here in the US!! Delaying an aid increase makes no sense, since it will produce little savings, and if we wait to address health threats the cost will only be greater later on!!! That includes health threats that Homeland Security has warned about, like drug resistant TB. Biden mentioned the madrassas in Afghanistan — how is the US going to help Afghanistan and other countries expand access to basic, quality secular education without increasing aid? What he and Obama are saying is penny-wise and pound foolish!

Mr. Brokaw,
Please bring the topic of ending global hunger into the candidates’ midst at the Belmont debate in Nashville, TN. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Perhaps THE question of the night:
Surely a third of the world’s population would benefit from economic aid programs for people in extreme poverty who live on less than $2. a day. HOw would our action help us in the United States? What suggestions do you have for people of this country who want to help people of the world gain access to clean water or to help their children to have more food supplies so that they ingest adequate calories a day to grow healthy brains?

In 2008, isn’t the time right for the United States of America to re-focus attentions and resources to aid and assist the needs of our Domestic poor, and finally begin to give less to those in foreign lands?

will the US explore all diplomatic options before resorting to war as is the case in the middle east. How will either of these candidates lead by example and not to contrive rules and policies as they go along as that has put the Country in a bad light all over the world.
