Reporting to you live from outside the 2008 MDG Malaria Summit…
At the 2008 MDG Malaria Summit in New York today, global leaders in health, government and business announced over $3 billion in new malaria money to help spur the world toward ending malaria deaths by 2015 – making it the single biggest day for malaria announcements in the history of the fight against the disease.
Speakers including Bono, Gordon Brown, Bill Gates, President Kagame of Rwanda and President Kikwete of Tanzania discussed how far the world has come in recent years to combat malaria and how far we still have to go. Peter Chernin, President and COO of News Corporation and Malaria No More Chairman, helped moderate the event, adding that malaria is not an isolated disease but both a consequence and cause of extreme poverty.
Two of the biggest announcements were from the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank, announced $1.1 billion as funding for Phase II of the World Bank Booster Program and Rajat Gupta, Chair of the Global Fund, announced Round 8 funding recommendations for malaria control efforts totaling $1.62 billion.
In celebrating the new commitments, grassroots support and political will that is driving the worldwide effort to end malaria deaths, event host UN Special Envoy for Malaria Ray Chambers urged the community not to become complacent. While today represents a big step forward, the race to end deaths – 3,000 children every day – is far from over.

This is a great testimate to humanity and reflects how people, advocacy groups and large corporations can come together to help those in need. The innocent lives that will be saved with such generous gestures and commitments to stopping needless suffering and death will change the world and lives of others. This generosity can and will spread to others and challenge all of us to participate in changing the world. I urge all of you to support these efforts and others by becoming informed and then advocaing for those that need our help.

Very good news on the issue of malaria eradication funding – let’s just hope that the promise of this funding will actually become a reality “on the ground” for the world’s poorest people.

Screw the other “poor countries” of the world; what about taking care of things here at home in America? How about getting Healthcare under control here first?… How about stemming poverty in the United States first?… Who’s going to come to the aid of America once our society “implodes”; which it’s on the very edge of ecomomically, politically, resource-wise, healthcare-wise, employment-wise, illegal-immigration/iinvasion-wise, militarily, and so on. Let’s get America in propper shape first before helping strangers of the world. C’mon.

I THINK THE UNITED STATES SHOULD WORRY ABOUT THE UNITED STATES, GIVEN THAT WE ARE TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DEBT ITS TIME THAT WE START WORRYING ABOUT OUR OWN POOR. OUR CITIES ARE FULL OF WELFARE BUMS AND DRUG ADDICTS AND KIDS WITHOUT ANY PARENTS SUPPORT THE POOR IN THE U.S.

So many military experts – from Colin Powell to the CIA ( yes – the CIA) have agreed with ONE’s contention regarding this idea so I would think that any real patriot for our country would understand the value of making friends in the world’s poorest countries through the programs that ONE advocates for rather than have those same poor countries turn into havens for terroists bent on fomenting instability in the world.
Think about it and you’ll see the whole picture and realize that we, AS ONE, are trying to protect the security of the world as we try to eliminate extreme poverty.
And I say this as a STRONG ONE SUPPORTER of over four years and as someone who lived in poverty in the USA almost all my life!
ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE – debbie

In 2008, isn’t the time right for the United States of America to re-focus attentions and resources to aid and assist the needs of our Domestic poor and those in need, and finally begin to give less to those in foreign lands?
