Impact ‘08

Last week I went with several ONE volunteers to the Impact ’08 luncheon in Coral Gables, Florida. Impact ’08 is a national, non-partisan initiative of the Center for U.S. Global Engagement which calls on the next president to invest more in global development and diplomacy as the cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy.

The foreign policy discussion, which was moderated by CBS4 Miami News Anchor Antonio Mora, featured former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and former head of U.S. Southern Command Gen. Barry McCaffrey. The program also included welcoming remarks by Florida House Majority Leader Adam Hasner and Florida House Democratic Whip Ronald Brise.

The panelists talked about ways to advance global health, economic prosperity and international cooperation while restoring America’s global image and moral leadership. Following the discussion, we talked to a number of the guests about the ONE campaign and our efforts in South Florida to engage the presidential candidates and campaign staff in discussions around extreme poverty.

We were really encouraged by the response to our presence at the event and the number of people that we encountered that are energized by our issues and want to spend their free time helping fight extreme poverty.

Screw the other “poor countries” of the world; what about taking care of things here at home in America? How about getting Healthcare under control here first?… How about stemming poverty in the United States first?… Who’s going to come to the aid of America once our society “implodes”; which it’s on the very edge of ecomomically, politically, resource-wise, healthcare-wise, employment-wise, illegal-immigration/iinvasion-wise, militarily, and so on. Let’s get America in propper shape first before helping strangers of the world. C’mon.

In 2008, isn’t the time right for the United States of America to re-focus attentions and resources to aid and assist the needs of our Domestic poor and those in need, and finally begin to give less to those in foreign lands?

Sara and other ONE community organizers–thanks for encouraging accountability from our elected leaders. To folks that believe we can’t take care of “in-house” business and assist with global poverty (see comments from “Concerned American, et. al), I believe you need to think about the long-term costs associated with doing nothing to help resolve global poverty and health issues. We can’t afford to stand by and watch the spread of environmental degradation, deadly disease, and religious extremism. All of these problems ignore political boundaries, and are ultimately preventable assuming just a little bit of focused attention and cooperation from global leaders. To suggest that we can’t right our own ship while building global partnerships shows little faith in our country and our infastructure, and is entirely un-American. A little bit of investment poorer nations will go a long way in building bridges for future economic and social prosperity.

How proud I am to say that I am related to Josh and Sara. Our future, the next generation. Those who think about global issues, human rights, and a clean and safe ‘world environment’. These are young adults that do not spend their time watching ‘reality’ t.v. or keeping up with People magazine. I feel better knowing their remains a ‘good fight’ in our lineage.
