Senator John McCain announced his running mate for this election- Governor Sarah Palin. When Obama announced his vp-pick last week, ONE members wrote to him immediately calling on him to be a leader on global poverty, now we need to make sure we contact Governor Sarah Palin right away too.
Soon Palin will be engulfed in campaigning and national media, so now is our moment to break through the clutter. Send the below digital postcard to McCain vp-pick now and then forward the news to your friends. We want her to hear from ONE members first.

You have to admit that Sarah Palin is pretty hot (remember she was in the Ms. Alaska Pageant) and MUCH BETTER on the eyes than Joe Biden. Oh and wait until you see the bikini pics!!! NOT BAD for a mother of 5.

In choosing 1st term Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his VP pick, McCain and his advisors have demonstrated how thick headed they are when it comes to women. Do they honestly believe women are so stupid to vote purely for a woman? I supported Hillary because she was a smart, experienced woman who supported and has spent her life fighting for the issues I believe in, and I felt confident she would be a great American President.
Apparently, Republicans were desperate to choose a woman, not actually caring about experience or judgment, but solely focused on changing the dialogue and showing how bold they can be. Also, she is staunchly pro-life - an effort to attract the Republican conservative base. Is that going to attract the women voters who believe in their own right to choose?
The Obama/Biden ticket represents change, but also wise judgment, experience, hope and a new direction at its core. It is a choice that is the right one for America, not made just for a news headline.

Who IS that squeaky-voiced woman? And why did she try to get her brother-in-law fired from the state troopers? Just because she’s a woman, does NOT make her the right woman.

Fantastic choice!!!!!! As far as her not being for women’s rights( see first reply ), she’s exactly what the feminist movement has been all about!!! A woman can go out and have a career, home, husband, and babies. But I’m sure they will come up with some way of qualifying that when it comes to her. I wonder why??? Could I ,do I smell ————fear??
August 29, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Rhonda, with all due respect - please don’t delude yourself. I don’t think the women posting so far are doing so “out of fear” but out of DISGUST that male politicians think that “the women’s vote” (whatever that is) can be so easily influenced as to make it appear that the Republican party is appeasing the “women’s vote” by “one of their own”!
What this OBVIOUS political ploy by McCain and the Republicans for “the women’s vote” shows is the idea that the patronization of women for their voyes is alive & well in politics.
I, for One, will NOT be so easily bought & sold.

One is NOT about YOUR political views, is it?
I was thinking of signing on.
One should STAY FOCUSED!

This from a friend of mine.
“~Paules Says:
It’s a day after the announcement and time for some sober reflection.
1. Conservative blogs are on fire. Comment threads that normally draw a few dozen responses are running into the hundreds. The conservative base is back.
2. The money is rolling into the McCain/Palin campaign so fast that the servers are having trouble managing the traffic. The MSM will be stunned when the numbers are announced.
3. Conservatives are euphoric. I didn’t expect to see those two words in the same sentence in my lifetime. On sober reflection the euphoria appears to be fully justified.
4. The timing is nothing short of brilliant. Obama has been knocked off the front pages a day after his acceptance speech. This is what you get when pros are running the show.
5. The convention starts next week. This is the chance for the Republicans to knock it out of the park. A good performance will throw the Democrats into a panic.
6. The electoral college numbers have been drifting right over the past six weeks. The raw data show Obama ahead, but the tide is running against him. This could be a tsunami before it’s all over.
7. Conservatism is BACK. In the words of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain: “Have the men fix bayonets. Prepare to charge!”
Focus on World poverty damn it
August 31, 2008 at 8:53 am
I will not speak for the others in this thread who have also made comments about this pick by Sen McCain for his running mate - I’ll simply speak for myself and then try to leave this thread alone because there is more to do in my day than to be in this blog.
Dougman, if you are asking us to keep politics out of this thread, then what about your post directly above mine? You are directly injecting politics in this thread through your post yet you admonish us to keep politics out of our posts!
That is simply hypocritical.
You say that you are thinking about signing up for ONE. If you are committed to ending AIDS and extreme poverty in our world then you will NOT use our posts which seem to have not been according to your own viewpoints AS AN EXCUSE to not join with us.
The suffering of the world’s poorest people is a bigger issue than mere domestic politics. It surpasses our own puny issues in this country.
If you are SINCERE about ending world poverty then you will look past the political differences here and JOIN US AS ONE!
As I had to remind others in the Pelosi thread:
“We are young AND old, male AND female, straight AND Gay. We are from EVERY ethnic background, from every spiritual background and from every poltical persuasion.”
I have been a loyal and active ONE member from the start of this organization since May 2004. It has changed a lot in the last four years and I have not always agreed with everything that our national office does. (If someone always agreed with everything someone else did, I would question that person’s own integrity.)
But my support of the goals of ONE never changes and so I have learned to co-exist with viewpoints and ideas with which I do not agree - for the ultimate good of the world’s poor.
I suggest thst you do the same - if you really do care about the world’s poorest people.
For me, as an intelligent woman, I am incensed when any politician tries to pander to my gender by giving my “one of my own” as his running mate - whether they are Republican or Democrat.
I’ll leave for someone else to discuss with you just HOW ENTRENCHED the fight to end AIDS and extreme poverty is into politics.
You can not “focus on world poverty” without being knee-deep into politics.

“ONE members wrote to him immediately calling on him to be a leader on global poverty,..”
So then I wanted to let you know about this:
“2. The money is rolling into the McCain/Palin campaign so fast that the servers are having trouble managing the traffic.”
You said,,i.”I, for One, will NOT be so easily bought & sold.
and
“You can not “focus on world poverty” without being knee-deep into politics.”
It’s not about politics with you. It’s all about YOU.

Sir,
I have not attacked you in this thread yet you seem intent on making this a personal conversation when, in truth, this conversation should be about ISSUES and not individuals.
I have the right to voice my opinion in this blog in a respectful manner to others. I don’t see where I have attacked you on a personal level but I can see two instances where you have attacked me on a personal level.
Let me remind you of the posting guidelines in this Blog:
Some Comments on Commenting!
The ONE Blog is meant to foster conversation and dialogue about timely global poverty news - and to that end - we strongly encourage readers to reply to posts, and to each other, through the ONE Blog’s comments. Anyone can make a comment by logging in and registering a username and valid email address.
Comments are largely unmoderated, but please treat each other well. Below are a few very simple rules:
Comments that contain profanities are automatically screened and deleted.
Comments with 3 or more links are held for moderation (to reduce spam.)
Commenters who purposely misrepresent their official relationship with ONE, and mislead others’ of ONE’s official opinions in their comments, are subject to warning and their comments may be deleted.
Different points of view are always welcome, but comments that attack an individual are subject to moderation and deletion.
Because we need to maintain an atmosphere of respect on the ONE Blog, we may have to block individuals who break the above rules often. But we don’t expect that to happen much.
You can help us moderate our blogging community by flagging questionable comments here.
That’s all. Happy commenting!

It is fine if we are on different sides of a political issue. That is American democracy and it is welcomed in this blog.
What is NOT welcomed is turning a political discussion into a PERSONAL attack - and that you have done.
Please desist from it as of now or you will be poorly reflecting on you and the people in politics which you seem to support.
I will contact the moderators of this Blog and ask them to make sure that future discussion in this thread is carried out in an atmosphere of respect for others and personal civility.
Thank you.

If you choose not to than good luck by thinking you only have allies and friends on the Left of the spectrum.

I really have to ask all of you posting mean and/or political comments on this site, please remember the purpose of One is to help rid the world of poverty. Surely we can work toward that objective without getting into the political posture of anyone. I for one don’t care what your political beliefs are. I am very political and would be happy to discuss those views in the proper political forum. One is not it. I don’t think they posted the blog about Sarah Palin so that Democrats could attack her. If you look at the blog on Nancy Pelosi, I made basically the same comment a few days ago. I care about their politics, but not when they are working to help One. Please think about that. I fear that you are driving many people away from this site. I know that I hesitate before posting a comment now.

Wow, I really though that this site was going to be different from all the others. But, in reading through the various blogs it seems clear to me that this is just another Uber Leftwing all Republicans are bad blog site. This is exactly why I’m not a liberal anymore, because liberals really don’t care about people or issues they just care about shutting up or belittling anyone that disagrees with them. Freedom of speech is a mantra of the left but all I ever see is people on the left trying to shout down or shut up anyone on the right. Funny, I never see that kind of activity coming from the right. You people will never accomplish anything because you don’t really want to have an intelligent conversation you just want to break things and have tantrums like little children.
September 2, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Jclay, I read your comment with great concern and understanding. I am a Conservative Republican and many of the comments on this particular blog are offensive. However, I do not blame One for that. They are not responsible for the people who leave comments. I hope that you will reconsider and will continue to support One. Believe me there have been times when I have felt like a voice calling out in the wilderness. Freedom of speech should not be just a mantra of the left. It should be available to all of us. When I first came on this site and read the vicious comments people were leaving about Senator Frist, who I greatly admire, I almost stopped reading the blogs, but then I realized that everyone should be welcome on this site. And you know what, Jclay, I’m not going to let some ill tempered uncivil people stop me from participating in something as worthwhile as One. I hope you reconsider.

In my four years of being an ACTIVE volunteer for ONE, I have NEVER come across any ONE member who was not more than willing to WORK TOGETHER with others who disagreed with them - politically or otherwise.
When it comes to the IMPORTANT work of ONE - getting the money put into programs that fight AIDS and extreme poverty in our world, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED DIVISION IN THIS ORGANIZATION.
We may not always agree with each other but we always work together on behalf of the world’s poorest people - and I don’t know what more anybody in this thread wants.
Let’s EMBRACE OUR DIFFERENCES as God made us all unique but let us come together AS ONE when the real work of this organization is upon us.
Instead of seeing the glass half empty, how about some of you seeing the glass half full?
Never forget these words:
“We’re ONE - but we’re not the same. We get to carry each other.”
I REMAIN….ALWAYS ONE in the Spirit, debbie

GinnyD, thank you for your warm and concerned response to my earlier post. I’m relieved to see that not everyone here is a zealot. I love the idea of this site and hate to see things like this and I will reconsider and help support this site, however, I have little patience for those that are not truly open to all points of view and simply wish to shut down anyone with a differing point of view.

Instead of seeing the glass half empty, how about some of you seeing the glass half full?
September 2, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Debbie, I don’t know what you are talking about, but what is wrong with welcoming everyone? Don’t lose sight of what One stands for. That isn’t seeing a glass half empty. We don’t need to attack each other, we should keep each other in our hearts with love and respect. I do not want a person to feel unwelcome on this site, and I don’t think most other people would disagree with that.
September 2, 2008 at 11:11 pm
There is NOTHING wrong with welcoming everybody. That is what I have done several times in my posts. And no one is making anyone feel unwelcomed at this site. People are creating their own obstacles to feeling welcomed here.
I repeat:
“If you are committed to ending AIDS and extreme poverty in our world then you will NOT use our posts which seem to have not been according to your own viewpoints AS AN EXCUSE to not join with us.
The suffering of the world’s poorest people is a bigger issue than mere domestic politics. It surpasses our own puny issues in this country.
If you are SINCERE about ending world poverty then you will look past the political differences here and JOIN US AS ONE!”
September 2, 2008 at 11:15 pm
you are Debbie, you are. Those of us who believe in One have looked past the rude comments. We will continue to do so. I don’t need you or anyone else to make me feel welcome. Neither will you or anyone else make me feel unwelcome. Concentrate on fighting poverty, leave the personal flip comments out of it.

Peace be with you too, my sister.

What makes everyone think it is Americas job to end Global Poverty????? Dont we have enough to take care of here, to preserve our freedoms and right to persue our dreams If every country was a Democracy they could grow to be indpendent like us…..I am appalled that (Global Poverty) is going to influence anyones vote on our Presidential election.
September 4, 2008 at 10:45 am
Kelly, that’s actually a very valid point and I agree that global poverty shouldn’t be the primary issue that people choose a presidential candidate on. I think the issue is not so much that it’s our “job” to end global poverty as it’s just the right thing to do. I agree that helping to move countries toward free markets and democracy will go MUCH farther to this end then anything else we can do. To quote a great man, “give a man a fish….” well you probably know the rest. Freedom, free markets and democracy is ultimately what will help to end global poverty. Throwing money at corrupt governments will do nothing to this end except help to prop up the dictators.
September 4, 2008 at 11:00 am
Hi all,
Since its inception, we’ve pictured the ONE Blog as being a public forum for ONE members, volunteers, and everyone invested in the cause of ending global poverty to connect with one another, share ideas, and ultimately work together to raise awareness and action around the issues we all care about. So far, we are thrilled with the level of impassioned response and activity we’ve seen and feel honored to be able to facilitate such substantive and provocative discussion.
As you’ve probably noticed, in recent days and weeks some of that impassioned discussion has, at times, grown a little heated. Because we’re all committed to the free exchange of ideas and information, we certainly do not enjoy vigorously monitoring the blog for offensive content or even deleting certain comments when they cross the line. However, it is well within our right to do so and, moving forward, if we notice certain discussions heading downhill, we may feel compelled to intervene. Above all else, we aim to make the ONE blog a forum for discussion that introduces diverse viewpoints, but in order for this to be a productive forum we expect behavior respectful of other readers.
As in the past, we ask only that commenters remain respectful of each other’s opinions-even when it’s difficult-and do everything within their power to keep the comment thread related to the issue being discussed. You can help us moderate our blogging community by flagging questionable comments here: http://www.one.org/contact/website.html. We certainly value and appreciate everyone’s level of enthusiasm and hope to see this blog continue to grow in time. So, as always, comment away!
-Chris

i’m not going to support Sara Palin or Mccain b/c she is not trying to help this country or womens rights. I don’t know why she is running anyways they ain’t gonna let her nothin while she is in office. If she even gets in. She is a lier. She lied about what Obama said talkin bout he wants to raise taxes. but you know what people don’t play fair won’t get anywhere. She says she has more experience than obama well she could have fooled me. To me she sounds like she don’t know nothin about running a country not even to help run a country. Us staying in war is going to hurt us. There are soldiers who wants to go back home and see their family. There are families who wants them come home. OIL OIL OIL thats all they want. What they need to do is get out of there and focus on the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which claim to love and if they do then they would do whats right for all of us not just them.
September 6, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Okay, Ashley…..there are no words in the english language to describe how unbelievably ignorant your post is. I’ll just leave it at that.
September 6, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Jclay, I’m glad to see that you are still with us. I surely agree with your last comment. Hang in there, and eventually we will get people to focus on One and what its goals are and how best to achieve them.

I strongly support MacCain/Palin whose spirit and policy will save American in this very difficult recession.
