New Ad Buzz

August 22nd, 2008 at 7:09 pm | posted by Chris.Scott

Days before our brand new Voices ad even hits the airwaves for the first time, we’re already overwhelmed by the amount of attention—and press—it’s getting! 85,000+ views on Youtube, shout-outs in dozens of most well-read blogs, numerous mentions in the national press - and thanks to YOU the buzz continues to build.

The Associated Press was the first to break the story with the Boston Globe, ABC News, Entertainment Tonight, E!, and others quickly following suit.

The Chicago Tribune’s blog Swamp describes the ad as “a remarkable show of Matt Damon channeling the words of the wives of the presidential candidates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg - with the actor’s image playing a ventriloquist’s role for a bipartisan and independent team of voices appealing for help for the world’s poorest.” The Defamer says Matt Damon “makes a convincing first lady.” Democratic Blogging Staple DailyKos describes the ad as “non-partisan tackling of global poverty, hunger and HIV/AIDS”, and Republican powerhouse blog Townhall breaks the news that the ad “will debut on Meet the Press on Sunday.”

To see what all the fuss is about visit www.one.org/voices and be sure to pass along to your friends to help spread our message of ending global poverty.

Below, a small sampling of the ad’s blog coverage so far:

Amazing video! I also put it up on our site as the video of the day…I’ll just conveniently leave it for the weekend :)

i popped into a number of these links, and their replies, and tho i know an ad like this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, the lion’s share were not too kind. but from the obscene comfort and anonymity of the keyboard it’s easy to be critical and cynical, and so often that’s the default and it can be contagious.

but i want to suggest that maybe this ad isn’t for each of us here as current ONE members. Matt Damon has an amazing reputation as a humanitarian and as an A-list celebrity, could it be that this ad may just be to grab the attention of the brilliant thinking American constituency who need to know and need to care about the issues we here know and care about. These on the other side of the airwaves who view our message for the first time, or first time in a while, i would think they would appreciate that are not being spoken down to, being addressed by another condescending organization that is spoon-feeding them thru emotional appeals. we need those as well, but ONE is a whole different animal.

curiosity just may keep their attention, and when in time it is known that the voices are the two front-running candidate’s wives, potential first ladies, that to me is a brilliant bipartisan statement. we don’t need to spoon-feed the public. treating them as thinking adults who can process this ad intelligently, is a credit to our organization here. and when they come to ONE.org, there is much more substance than any of those above publications that base their articles and replies and opinions on conjecture, emotion, and drama. imho.

kudos to Mr. Damon, Mrs. Obama, and Mrs. McCain, as well as the production team for this ad here that have developed this awesome ad, without asking us for a penny toward production or airtime, as usual. based on the number of hits i’ve read from places ONE has posted it, whether folks like it, love it, or abhor it, it seems to generate a response. what more could you ask for? makes for a great opportunity for us to recalibrate the discussion back to the campaign to make extreme poverty history.

    staying close,

    sammi

Here is an article that I hope that ONE will take an interest in in framing their next ad campaign. It appears, at least in the U.K., that celebrity endorsements for issues may be losing their public support.

I would posit that, in these economic hard times and more people falling into poverty in our country, celebrity spokespeople may not have the sway that they once had with the American public.

Just an idea…………..but I still think Bob Geldof and Bono have more credibility on these issues than other recent celebrity spokespeople for ONE and I hope that they will always be an integral part of our movement to end AIDS & extreme poverty.

    I REMAIN………………….

    AS ONE, debbie :)

Mandela ‘crowned’ as most admired campaigner -

Political campaigners such as Nelson Mandela are more admired than celebrities who try to raise awareness of world issues. The former South African president, who spent 27 years in prison for his opposition to apartheid, topped a survey of respected campaigners conducted by charity Christian Aid. One fifth of people asked said he was the campaigner they most admired. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst came second and third in the poll of nearly 2,000 British adults, with 14 per cent and 12 per cent each of the vote. They left celebrity campaigners like U2’s Bono, Bob Geldof and Angelina Jolie trailing. Just 2 per cent of people said they admired Angelina Jolie for her humanitarian work with refugees, and only 6 per cent expressed respect for Live Aid founder Bob Geldof.

The charity said their findings showed “people are more impressed by a deeply serious campaigner.” Christian Aid’s campaign manager Rhian Beynon said: “We wanted to find out who people in the UK most admired when it came to campaigning. “The results were fascinating. For us it is very interesting that people are less impressed by celebrities, than someone who stood his ground over a long time. “Nelson Mandela set an example as an individual who made a difference.” But Christian Aid said that celebrities who crusade against poverty, disease and suffering should not give up just yet. Ms Benyon said: “Celebrities can help by lifting the profile of an issue. “It’s really valuable and good for the younger generation to see young campaigners. We’re trying to encourage all sorts of individuals to get out there and campaign. “We can’t all be Nelson Mandela, but we can all make a difference in our own way.” source: channell4

    To Whom It May Concern:

I respect your cmapaign and its mission and the desire to stay politically neutral. Needless to say, I am compelled to communicate the superior inappropriateness Matt Damon has exercised on the eve of your ad campaign in order to undermine a potential Vice Presidential candidate (link http://www.breitbart.tv/html/171553.html).

It is quite disturbing. I am duty-bound to make this comment to ONE because of the way that he discredits Sarah Palin’s role as a mayor, and governor. Ironically, I am almost willing to look past those juvenile statements (as I am willing to look past Senator Obama’s lack of experience as well) even though they came across so arrogant and condescending. But as I continued to witness his implications as he suggested motivations (can Mr. Damon really see into the heart of men, I know I can’t), patronized Mrs. Palin (and the majority of America) because of her religious beliefs and convicted her of the possibility of burning books in an international interview, I had to present this email and communicate how hideous, immature and dangerous these comments were.

Believe me, I understand the desire to use popularity and celebrity as a pulpit for personal beliefs but Mr. Damon should respect that every man has a voice and yet does not have the same opportunity he currently affords – for him to spew mean and disingenuous nonsense is an abuse to that privilege and to the societal fairness we all care about.

His political beliefs and motivations have been transparent and that is appreciated (and I continue to support his movies while I continue to respect his political positions even though we do not agree) but, given that transparency he compromises his integrity by making such claims as in his interview in Toronto. I believe he should recognize his position in this country – that of a citizen, no greater or lesser than any of us – and politely and respectfully apologize to Sarah Palin while continuing to disagree with her politics.

Hopefully he will receive this email, but if not I guess the only victory is that this very poor personal representation of a good actor will live on forever on the internet.

    Respectfully,

    Randal Clark

  6. Tom Gavin, One.org Says:

Matt Damon made an ad for ONE because he cares deeply about the fight against extreme poverty. He helped to draw attention to this issue at a key political moment, but Matt’s views about Governor Palin are his own. Both presidential campaigns are supportive of ONE’s agenda and we will continue to bring both sides together in the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease.

ONE is a nonpartisan organization which enjoys the support of people across the political spectrum — including Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama, Tom Daschle, and Bill Frist, among others. ONE and its supporters are united in and committed to this critically important effort.

While only two bills were enacted, the states of Alaska and Hawaii, which have been the top two states in pork per capita every year but one since 2000, were served more then their fair share of bacon by Senators Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii). In the defense appropriations bill alone, Alaska received $209,900,000, a 127 percent increase over the total of $92,425,000 in 2006.
