Bono On The Passage of PEPFAR

July 31st, 2008 at 11:30 am | posted by Virginia Simmons

Yesterday afternoon, President Bush signed into law new PEPFAR legislation, finalizing months of work by ONE members, Democratic and Republican congressional leaders, advocacy organizations, foreign policy experts and medical professionals who worked together to pass historic new funding levels to fight AIDS, TB and malaria.

ONE Campaign Co-founder Bono issued this response:

“Americans, whether they know it or not, are literally saving the lives of millions of people in the poorest places on the planet. In the last five years, America has prevented 1 million women from passing on HIV to their babies…funded care for 3 millions AIDS orphans…and provided desperately needed medicine to more than 1.4 million people suffering from HIV/AIDS. You are my heroes and not just for what you’ve done, but for what this new law promises.

This has more to do with hard heads than soft hearts. America’s global AIDS plan has proved to be a smart investment, paying dividends in live saved, communities stabilized and America’s reputation in the world growing a little bit brighter. This stuff works and leaders from left and right — leaders like Senators Biden and Lugar, Representatives Berman and Ros-Lehtinen, President Bush, Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid - put aside their differences and agreed to do more.”

Thank you, Bono, for returning to the ONE Blog - we are hono(red) at your presence here.

While each ONE of us has made contributions to our movement to end AIDS and extreme poverty, there is no dispute of the seminal role that you have played, and hopefully will continue to play, at the forefront of our movement.

For it was your relentless efforts, at times to the potential detriment of your other pursuits, alongside those at DATA - Jaime, Lucy, Tom, Erin and more - that planted the seed in the hearts and minds of the President and Congress that eventually blossomed into PEPFAR, the MCC and other programs to fight AIDS & extreme poverty.

Without your personal efforts & those of DATA’s, I believe that we would not have come as far as we have in our movement. So the victory of the PEPFAR signing yesterday was, in large part, all because of you, Bono.

But, as Tom Hart mentioned yesterday in his post and as I agreed with him, yesterday was really not about you, DATA, ONE or the American people - it really was about the Africans whose lives have been saved and will be saved in the future because of our efforts.

We, AS ONE, give our time, our efforts and, for some of us, our hearts & souls to our movement to end AIDS & extreme poverty NOT so that we can get your kudos (as much as they are appreciated) and your attention but so that MILLIONS of people will have another chance at life…..and that should be all the kudos that we should need.

So, BLESS YOU & THANK YOU, BONO, for returning to the ONE Blog. We are all thrilled that you are in our midst - not as a rock star but as another human soul who feels that to sit by and watch the hemmorrhaging of life & culture from the Mother Continent of Humankind is just something that you can not do.

And in your resolve to stop this, you have helped to fashion an international movement of people to join you.

There simply are no words that I can ever say that will sufficiently express my gratitude and positive feelings for you for this action of yours.~

Take very good care, Bono. Blessings always for you & yours.

For the month of July I have been touring Europe. I even spent three nights in Dublin. I have seen how governments can make their constituents a priority. I am hopeful that Africa will someday be as prosperous as the countries I have visited. I am concerned about colonialism though. I hope that the funding and the help given to people in need in third world countries is not bought on the backs of future generations.

Thank you for taking your position in popular pop culture and turning into such a successful philanthropic lifes work.

I love your music and I love what you are doing for people who haven’t had it so good.

    **BREAKING NEWS**

Speaking of the interface between music and action ….

We’ve JUST been cleared to bring a ONE table to our event at The Echo on Saturday night, August 16.

I’m going to see if we can’t get a press release together in conjunction with the PR department at ONE headquarters. (We were working on one for September, but this is a larger venue, on a better night.)

Anyone interested in attending in Los Angeles, see:
    http://www.one.org/event/GeneralEvent/488

    Saturday Night, August 16
Hang the DJs Night at the Echo
    1822 W. Sunset Blvd.

**Also, we need someone to man the table, so anyone in Los Angeles who can do it, please contact me via MySpace or through the Event link above.**

Come wear your ONE shirt to increase ONE awareness among a literate, hip audience of L.A. music enthusiasts. Paul Avion will be wearing his own ONE shirt on stage.

Thank you! God bless you! May our Heavenly Father bless you with health, favor and wisdom to continue moving forward and doing what you do.
    You are an inspiration.

Just an FYI for Paul Avion:

As a longtime volunteer for ONE, the best way to get the word out about your event & to get people to show up at the event to support ONE is to join a ONE yahoo group in your area. You can find out more about these groups at this link:

    http://www.one.org/groups/apply.html

Network on your MySpace and Facebook with other local people because these will be the folks to come out to your event.

Posting all your info here may not reach as many people to join you AS ONE at your event as if you kept it local. Just some ideas.

I still have at least two more outreach opportunities this year which should end up bringing about another 500 people over to ONE. Added to those 900 ONE sign ups that I have already sent in this year, this will indeed be a banner year for ONE in Austin TX!

    LIVING POSITIVELY, debbie :)

So many people worked so hard for this recent victory–activists made calls, wrote letters, cajoled papers into writing editorials, and spoke passionately to elected officials. We still have work to do in order to see that this legislation gets funded. Let’s all pursue the real money with the same zeal that we pursued this authorizing legislation. Our passion and our voices will make the world a better place. The people who make decisions on our behalf every day need to know we are here, and they need to know what we want. Make it happen.
