Take Action: Call Now for Global AIDS Funding
July 15th, 2008 at 10:41 am | posted by Virginia Simmons
The Senate continues to debate PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) today and will be holding a series of critical votes. We need you to call your senators right now and tell them to vote to pass this bill.
There is a chance that an individual senator could raise something called a “budget point of order,” in which case we’d need 60 votes to bypass this additional obstacle or else the entire bill will be defeated.
We believe that there is strong, bipartisan support to pass PEPFAR, but we’re not out of the woods yet. This is the moment we need you most. Please call now and ask your senators to support this bill for $50 billion dollars in critical global AIDS, TB and malaria over the next five years.
All the information you need to make your call is here.

I’ve also made my call to both my Senators’ DC offices this morning. I spoke from my heart and let their office staff know that the re-authorization of PEPFAR is ESSENTIAL to saving the lives of MILLIONS of people in Africa and the care of millions of AIDS orphaned children.
I thanked my Senators’ office staff for the past support of PEPFAR that my Senators have given this prgram and to respect Pres. Bush’s final request for PEPFAR funding.
I mentioned how I have been a ONE member from our beginnings four years ago and that I have contacted my Congressional Representatives many times in the last five years regarding their support of PEPFAR.
I also mentioned that, like many of us in ONE, I have personal friends in the Continent who are benefitting from the generosity of the American people and of how we can not allow these people’s lives to fail now that we have bestowed on them hope for their futures.
I think I got my point across because the staffers taking my calls were quite emotionally moved.
I will continue to watch the proceedings this afternoon on C-Span 2.
God bless ONE for all that it does for Africa. May we continue to carry each other.~
ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE - debbie

I made the calls. I have one senator who has supported it from the beginning and one who was part of the “hold” and I hope they spoke with each other about this. Keep up the “encouragement!!!”
For the children…
