		<description>Here is our conumdrum with PEPFAR re-authorization before the G8 summit (and even after).

First, we have McCain.

Here is the repost of my comments from Matthew Bartlett&#039;s YouTube appearance asking Sen. McCain to do all that he can to unstick PEPFAR re-authorization before the G8 summit:

&quot; This is from the dailykos article that Betty posted:

“What’s scary about Coburn is not just how wrong he is (see the comments above from Denis Nash and Mead Over; they are public health experts, which Coburn is decidedly not), and how far out of the mainstream he is, it’s that he’s John McCain’s chief medical adviser and functions as a medical adviser for Republicans”

Uh??????

We, as ONE, have a LOT of work cut out for us to do if Coburn is that highly regarded as a “medical advisor” for Senate Republicans!!

I noticed how McCain was wiggling around Matthew’s questions and I wasn’t REALLY convinced in my heart that he would do whatever he could to get PEPAR unstuck in the Senate - and now I’m completely convinced of that!

Please update us from the DC office about what is going on regarding McCain, Coburn &amp; PEPFAR. Could Bill Frist be of any help in this situation?

Looking forward to SOME response from our DC ONE team about all this.&quot;

As if that isn&#039;t troubling enough, check out this tasty tidbit from the Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report from the other day regarding the DEMOCRATS&#039; hesistancy toward re-authorizing PEPFAR:

http://www.kaisernetwork.org/daily_reports/rep_index.cfm?DR_ID=52742

&quot;According to CQ Today, it is unclear whether the legislation will reach the Senate floor this year. Supporters of the measure had hoped it would pass the Senate ahead of the Group of Eight industrialized nations summit in July. However, Reid&#039;s aides said there is nothing he can do in response to the petition. In addition, Senate Democrats have been unwilling to bring the measure to a floor vote because it would &quot;give [President] Bush an item for his legacy on his way out of office,&quot; according to some advocates. &quot;There&#039;s no political win for (Reid) if it passes,&quot; one advocate said.&quot;

OK, do I understand this correctly? The Democrats, headed by Sen. OBAMA, are willing to let PEPFAR slip through re-authorization and put at risk the lives of MILLIONS of African people to muck around with Pres. Bush&#039;s legacy?

If this is true, that is TOTALLY WHACK and Harry Reid has some answering to do to our movement
(didn&#039;t former ONE CEO, Susan McCue, come out of Sen. Reid&#039;s office?)

WHO IS ON OUR SIDE IN THE U.S. CONGRESS? More importantly, who is on the side of the millions of African people whose lives are at risk as our government plays political football with their lives?

We, AS ONE members, need answers to these questions. We need our leadership in this movement to TALK TO US and let us know that they are doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to pull a miracle out of this political morass for Africa&#039;s People.

I look forward to more info regarding all the publicity in Paris today. Honestly, given the current mess in the U.S. Congress over PEPFAR, it would have been a wise tactic to have held that news conference in DC.

BONO - I STILL HAVEN&#039;T FOUND WHAT I&#039;M LOOKING FOR. I can&#039;t believe that you have either.

ONE HEART, ONE HOPE, ONE VOICE, ONE LOVE - debbie :)
