Take Action: Ask Senators Reid and McConnell to Stand Up for PEPFAR

The window to reauthorize PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) for five more years and $50 billion is closing. At this critical moment, a handful of senators are blocking all action on the bill.

We need champions to pass this bill and keep America on the path to saving millions of lives in the developing world. Luckily, we have you and two very important senators.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are the two most powerful members of the U.S. Senate, and we know they are strong supporters of American leadership against these global killers.

Please add your name to the petition and send a message that now is the time for Senators Reid and McConnell to stand up for the world’s most vulnerable people and get this lifesaving legislation to the floor of the U.S. Senate for a vote.

Still waiting for update of Senate co-sponsors (the list next to the “meter” has not been updated since 5/16). I would e-mail my staff contacts again if I knew that my Senator(s) had not co-sponsored yet. Is this still a priority?

    Hi Scott,

Unfortunately, we haven’t had any new co-sponsors since mid-May. A lot of that is the result of uncertainty about the fate of the bill in the senate. That’s why we’re asking the Senate leadership, Reid and McConnell, to get this bill onto the floor for a vote, which we’re confident we can win. That said, more co-sponsors would be great, as would other forms of showing support, like the Lugar-Sununu letter campaign we ran earlier this month in targeted states. If your senators’ names aren’t on that list, then they haven’t co-sponsored PEPFAR reauthorization yet, so feel free to ask them to do so. Hopefully, we’ll have a vote soon and the chance to ask out senators for their support on actually passing this important legislation.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

Thanks Scott for asking your questions which I’m sure a lot of other ONE members were asking themselves about the status of PEPFAR in the Senate.

Communication is essential in our working together AS ONE for Africa’s Future.

If you would like a good resource place for info on the status of PEPFAR, then please visit ONE partner organization RESULTS website. (www.results.org)

RESULTS has been an organization that I have been going to for years for current info on bills in Congress relating to issues of extreme poverty.

Their main action alert for June is PEPFAR’s re-authorization.

Now – CONTACT YOUR SENATORS, Scott….and good luck!!

ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE – debbie :)
