Desmond Tutu: ‘Debt is Modern-Day Apartheid’
May 9th, 2008 at 11:58 am | posted by Monét Cooper, Jubilee USABe sure to check out the op-ed about debt, healthcare and the urgency of passing the Jubilee Act in the Senate written by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu in Wednesday’s Baltimore Sun. Writes Tutu:
Lesotho’s situation snows how debt and extreme poverty create a crisis for children…Lesotho has only six pediatricians looking after its 800,000 children. One-third of Lesotho’s children are not in school. Meanwhile, Lesotho’s debt repayments equal its entire education budget.
He continues:
As the Senate now considers the Jubilee Act, it can do it’s part to help ensure that Africans and Asians are able to sue their own resources for their own development.

Thanks Monet for letting us know about this excellent editorial on the importance of full debt cancellation for the world’s poorer countries by Rev. Desmond Tutu. I was very glad to see Rev. Tutu include the dire situation which faces Lesotho as it struggles with the many development difficulties that faces it - including its current debt problems.
One difficulty with this post - the links to view the entire editorial don’t work. Is there some way to fix the links so that we can read the entire editorial? Thanks.
It is Mother’s Day and, as a mother, my Heart is with all those mothers around the world who struggle to provide sufficiently for their own children, especially those in the world’s poorest countries.
Take very good care, everyONE. Blessings always.
