A Victory! And a message from David
May 7th, 2008 at 10:59 am | posted by Virginia SimmonsAaron taped this video of ONE CEO David Lane talking to ONE members about the world food crisis and their recent victories. Watch to learn more.
You can also check out this post to see our petition delivery to the White House last week.
UPDATE: What David says:
Thanks for being a part of our hunger crisis campaign. Since I first wrote to you about this crisis three weeks ago, your response has been overwhelming and made this one of our most successful campaigns ever.
137,000 ONE members have signed our petition to President Bush, asking him to lead the G8 – a group of the world’s richest and most powerful countries – in taking action to alleviate the impact this crisis is having on people around the world.
Rising prices for staple foods and low crop yields for the world’s poorest farmers have created a silent tsunami that threatens to push 100 million people deeper into poverty.
The petition you signed asked for two things:
1. For the G8 to prioritize issues of global poverty, including the world hunger crisis, on the agenda of the G8 Summit this July in Japan.
2. And for President Bush to secure commitments at the G8 summit for additional resources for all types of food assistance and increased agricultural productivity in developing countries.
Last week, we delivered your petitions to the White House adding your voice to the growing call for action. I am pleased to be able to share with you some of the work that’s already being done to help end the hunger crisis.
Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda put the global hunger crisis on the agenda for the G8 summit, as part of a broad commitment to fighting global poverty. That is an important victory, because Japan is hosting this July’s G8 summit, where international commitments to fight poverty will be made.
In the United States, President Bush made an initial pledge of $200 million in American food assistance and followed that up last week with a call for Congress to approve $770 million in food assistance and investment in agricultural infrastructure in the developing world.
Getting the hunger crisis onto the G8’s poverty fighting agenda, and securing pledges of increased food assistance and investment in agricultural development adds up to a big win. It’s a testament to the power of grassroots action against even the toughest challenges global poverty presents.
Our next step is to secure commitments at the G8 Summit this summer and at other funding opportunities, for the fight against extreme poverty and global disease.
Thanks for adding your voice to the call for action to end the hunger crisis.
You, as a ONE member, drive everything we do. I look forward to continuing to work with you on this issue and many others in the months to come. Visit ONE.org to find out the latest.”

This is truly the best organization I have ever had the honor to be a part of. Our victories are big yet so small when I think of children laying awake hungry and hurting. Thank you for helping me be an army of O.N.E.

I wish the video were captioned. Or maybe a text version accompanying it?
May 7th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
It is simple…easy…basic…yet so unbelievably profound…Such an overwhelming task doesn’t have to be so — it only takes so little, done by many and with one voice we can be heard. Thank you for giving us an avenue to shout audibly what our hearts beat silently within us. We have only just begun!!
May 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Congratulations to David and ONE! Let’s keep it going!
May 7th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Beautifully stated Ginny! “…shout audibly what our hearts beat silently…” tears to my eyes beautiful. This is what ONE is all about. You are what ONE is all about!

Glad to a part of such a wonderful organization. Keep it up.
May 7th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
It’s interesting how up in arms we get here in America about the rising price of gas to power our cars. Yet when corn and rise prices begin a meteoric rise, almost nothing is said. Thank you ONE for being a powerful voice for those who are hungry.
May 7th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
Congratulations to you on all of your wonderful works.
You are a wonderful example for all of us to follow.

May 7th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
How amazing that people are finally starting to realize we are all ONE! Imagine yourself as an individual cell in one huge cosmic body. Everything you do to your “cell” will affect all those around you, then around the adjacent cells, etc. What may seem like a small shift in thinking can and does have a very big impact. Congrats to ONE!
May 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
There is so much hope with this organization. Your expectation that extreme poverty will end is so encouraging.

Thank You for giving us this oportunity to be heard!! What a wonderful accomplishment, I am so honored to be a part of these efforts! My only wish is that this effort will keep spreading globaly and involve many, many, more people who truly do care to stop the hunger crisis! We can do it! Good work to everyone involved!
May 7th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Aloha David, This was music to my ears… Thank you for all you hard work to ensure something gets done about this problem… YOU ROCK! Aloha, Cairn
May 7th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
What a novel idea. Spending millions of dollars to feed the hungry, showing human kindness to human kind…instead of spending billions to kill. Imagine what we could really do ~ if we were intentional ~ to promote peace, justice, and tolerance while eradicating extreme poverty and global disease. Thank you ONE for allowing all of us to try and do just that. Penni

Power of One
I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.

May 7th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the things that should be done to rectify neglected areas of concern. Yet if each of us pick ONE thing, and act on it, we’ve begun to accomplish that task. It all hangs together people.Issues of poverty, hunger, health and education. Work on at least ONE, and we will indeed see progress in our lifetimes. Indeed, by giving someone else time to have that life, we will have WON our victory. Keep the pressure on, that those to whom we give the power to act, actually do so. Do the right thing, and do it now.
May 7th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
dear David,
thank you for the feedback on “our ” success so far thanks to your initiatives. I wanted to ask if you have helpful leads or contacts for me as i have just begun agricultural work in South Africa in the Transkei region in a small village to teach them how to grow more food in an effort to bulld some immunity and help slow the effects of HIV/AIDS, that affects at least 70% of the people there. I began simply and slowly as is necessary teaching llow cost fertilizer making , no-till planting and crop rotation. Now, building on this success i need to know what step 2,3,4 and so on is to progress toward our goals for the people. I am sure this is being done and has already been successfully done elsewhere in Africa even, so any help would be greatly appreciated especially by the people of this village, one of our goals is to get a successful model going, then duplicate it to other surrounding villages, teach the people so they become the teachers spreading the relief.
Thank you for your consideation and any assistance you may be able to share so i can pass it on and help feed some more and improve their lives sustainably.

Great work. If we can just get more and more people to see that we are all ONE and the humanity’s well being is a continuous thread that binds us all.
May 7th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Reply to dave vandusen:
You might want to try the Earth Institute at Columbia University, here in the United States. They do a lot of work with Milliennium Promise, Millennium Villiage Project, which is exactly what you describe.
By using high yield seeds, fertilizers, and innovative irrigation techniques, they have proven that increases in producton can be realized. Even if your area isn’t chosen as a ‘villiage’, they should be able to point you in the right direction, since the research has already been done, and put into practical application.

Thank you, Mr. Lane and all fellow ONE members.
I understand the need for Global Collaboration to fight hunger. I witness poverty and hunger every time I vist the Philippines. I do my share to help whenever I could by giving them goods and sending them care packages. The forthcoming shortage of rice in Asia is a real concern.
God bless ONE, God bless all!
May 7th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Thanks David and all of you. Let’s keep it up
May 7th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
David, you are truly good people. It takes a man to take a stand, but a bigger/better man to fight the battle. God’s gladator armed with ONE. Stand your ground David. I am with you in spirit.

Daviid,
Thank you so much for keeping all of the One members posted with our progress. It’s great to know that what we are doing actually can make a difference!
May 7th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
This is what we are all here for, and it makes me feel great that we as one. Can do so much with such little effort.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I am so glad that I found out about your organization last month. I feel the same way about poverty as an individual that your organization feels about Poverty–It needs to be made history. I was watching TBN(Trinity Broadcast Network) one sunday, they were having their annual praise-a-thon and one of the pastors speaking stated that the #1 thing that God wanted to get rid of on the earth was poverty and it excited me to know that my desire is the same. I will continue to support any efforts you make to help end poverty.

David ~
As an activist in the fight against the ignorance that many leaders around the world lead with I thank you with all of my heart for making our voices heard. Over 20 years ago while in college I became part of a movement started by my brother Paul Carroll. He created a Flag for the people of the World to use as a way to inspire eachother, learn about eachother and to help eachother. I would like to introduce you to that Flag and welcome you and the ONE organization to Fly The World Flag as a symbol of peace and unity in all matters of Global concern. Please reach out to me so that we can continue to work together on the challenges that face our World and the children and people of today and in the coming tomorrows! My family and I will be participating in Pangea Day in the state of Washington.

Thanks David and everyone at ONE, I am active with Invisible Children - what we are doing in partnership with ONE is a perfect combination: focusing on making a difference in one place, through very intensive individualized effort (Invisible Children) and maintaining a global focus and awareness (ONE). Dear David,
God bless you for all you are doing for those in need! Three years ago I discovered one,org and signed the One Declaration. Until that moment I didn’t realize that people really cared about those impacted by poverty and AIDS. I thought I was alone in my commitment and my passion. This June I leave to serve for a year as a teacher at a Children’s home in Malawi, Africa. David, you will continue to impact one person at a time. One mind and one heart waking up to the crisis of those in need and what they can do about it. No matter how tired you get, or discouraged, or scared, or angry, don’t you EVER forget the difference you are making. I am praying right now that you are encouraged in all that you are taking on. I don’t know if you know God or not, but I can assure you He knows you by name and He is proud of you for responding to the needs of the people He loves. Peace, Maribeth

I have chills! We are ONE awesome bunch!
May 7th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I get so caught up in my daily life that I forget that there are people out there who aren’t as blessed. I receive the messages from ONE.ORG and it gives me that nudge that’s like “hey, come on. Don’t just take and take… you gotta give back ,too!” Thanks for bringing me back down to earth and reminding me that there ARE things I can do to make a difference. You inspire me!

Believe in hope. Believe in humanity
And Believe in myself as one who CAN help.
Thank you David Lane for making this a possibility for people like me.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
ONE is fantastic, and I applaud everything that the people at ONE and the dedicated volunteers have done to bring attention to World Poverty. Let’s not stop there I say! Do your part to fight WORLD hunger by also fighting hunger at home. Donate or work at a local food shelter or soup kitchen. I challenge everyone to grow a small garden, and donate the entire harvest to the needy. Through a small garden we can help clean some carbon out of the atmosphere, and feed our sisters and brothers here at home; while making more food readily available for those abroad. Let’s end hunger in every corner of every continent. On every block and in every village.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
David, very good way to show the people like you are doing!
I think, everybody can do a video like this, saying exactly the same, and you tube receive the videos. After that, some politic people, can receive the videos, and understand what means repeat, and repeat always the same!!! Go go go !!!

I am proud to be a ONE member. I congratulate David Lane and the whole organization for working so hard to help the human race.I hope I can be of more help to the WORLD. In Argentina poverty and hunger are BIG and SERIOUS issues as well (for different reasons of course).

I’m so proud of the organization that I almost cried. We must continue to be good stewards of the world and helpers of people. It is our responsibility to feed all the hungry for the ones with all must give to those who don’t. GOD BLESS!!
May 7th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
tshirts might be a good way to get the world out. i know a bunch of high school students who would be willing to wear ONE shirts. it might help. but hey, every little bit that we can do to get the word out and raise awareness helps right? i mean it brings in money and support-exactly what we need!
if you start selling anything (tshirts, wristbands, etc.) let us know. =]
May 7th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Thank you so much for keeping us informed and for providing us with an easy way to make a difference. 137,000 voices is a small number in relation to our population size. We should all make a serious effort to spread the word
May 7th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
David,
Thanks for the update! Great news! Imagine the great things we can do when we all work together! The video is a great idea…nice to put a name and face together. I’m happy to be a part of ONE and look forward to doing whatever I can in the future.

The fight is far from over but we have made great strides to alleviate poverty. One day we will live in a world where poverty is nonexistent.
May 7th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
“Whatever you do, you do to your self” has never been truer, as far as I understand its meaning.
David Lane has been blessed and has shared a vision that so many individuals can share with him.
David Lane’s e-mail message created an unexpected, but jubliant feelingt; and then It brought tears of joy to read the responses. I feel blessed and grateful everytime One gives caring individuals, like myself, an opportunity to share and give a “helping hand” through their actions. The World has needed and now has a “voice” where politicians can hear the cries of the needy, and the “hearts” of those who hear those cries and want to help. Thank you David Lane for such a “caring heart” and finding a way to connect so many hearts with yours! GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO CONTRIBUTE TO ONE!

May 07, 2008
My ONE Pledge:
I am convinced that many of the challenges facing the poorest people of the world are at least exacerbated, if not caused, by the selfishness, consumerism, and gluttony of the people living in the G8 (the 8 wealthiest nations of the present world). To this extent – I am responsible. I cannot change the behavior of the people of the G8. I can however change my own behavior.
I have decided to adjust my lifestyle as to the luxuries of diet I enjoy in the US. I have decided to eat and drink in a way that, in my mind, approximates the way the poorest people of the world, once rescued by an air drop from the US or UK or Other wealthy nation, might. When we drop food supplies to these people we give them quality, basic, non-perishable items like water, soy, protein powders or drinks, pre-prepared grain based foods (similar to what we, in the US, might carry on a hike).
I am convinced that global warming, extreme poverty, and the unabated spread of curable disease are due, in large part, to our G8 gluttony.
Today (May 7, 2008) I have taken action to alter my ONE way of living as a global citizen. Today – I have cleaned out my cupboards, freezer, refrigerator, and counter tops. I have donated all of my regular food stuffs to others.
Beginning today I will eat and drink only the types of food items I have in my home. If I am away from home I will eat only similar items from elsewhere. The poorest of the world would likely consider themselves blessed to be able to choose from the items remaining in my home. Those items include (and my consumption will be limited to):
1. Water
2. Tea
3. Soy Milk
4. Protein Powder
5. Protein Drinks
6. Fruit Juice
7. Vegetable Juice
8. Protein Bars
I believe that, even with neither wealth nor popular platform, we can affect positive change ONE person at a time. With this belief in mind – I choose today – to eat and drink in this simple manner – until everyone in the world is rescued from the horrors of extreme poverty and disease.
To what near-term practical end? Living this way will substantially reduce what I spend each month on eating and drinking. I will plan to donate the difference to local and global efforts to feed those who are too poor to provide basic nutrition and clean water for themselves.
To what long-term practical end? The G8 nations have, within their collective control, the resources required to join together and end these horrors today. May my grandbabies know what it is to be citizens of a wealthy nation which has devoted itself and its resources to this end. May we one day actually choose to do so and then know what it is to live in a world entirely free from extreme poverty and curable disease. As ONE of the wealthiest people in the world, as “DAD”, as “Papa”, and as “Friend” - I accept this as my responsibility.

Thank you David Lane for your perserverance toward alleviating world hunger. When each of us takes action (no matter how small), it is a statement that we are not satisfied with the way people without opportunity survive.
My pledge to One.org and other organizations that work toward putting an end to world hunger is steadfast.
How about you?

Using YouTube.com was great. The message had relevance, and it was short & to the point.
May 7th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Mr. Lane, thank you for your diligence and hard work; as well as everyone else who works for ONE, and gives it a voice! Thank you for all the updates, as well. It is good to know that so many people care about the tragedies of extreme poverty and all its effects. It has been a lack of care - or not caring enough - that has made this such a catastrophe for so many, in the first place. Together, people can make a difference. It is great to get updates bearing news of successes because so many ONE members responded and gave the voiceless a voice in the Western world. Keep up the great work! And, hopefully, extreme poverty will soon be something in the history books, and far more people around the world will then be alive and have the health, food, income, and education to be able to read those history books. God bless!

IT’S WORTHWHILE AND SELF-REWARDING TO BE ONE WITH O.N.E. IT’S A SMALL STEP GAINING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS.
I HOPE WE COULD ALSO FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENT.
MY HOME COUNTRY, THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, WHERE MANY POOR FAMILIES LIVING UNDER $1 A DAY IS ESPECIALLY AFFECTED BY THE SOARING FOOD PRICES. AND ONE FACTOR ATTRIBUTABLE TO THIS IS THE RISING GAS PRICE. IF WE COULD ALSO ENCOURAGE OIL EXPORTING COUNTRIES TO CONTROL THE PRICE OF OIL, PERHAPS THE CHAIN REACTION IT CAUSES TO BASIC COMMODITIES COULD BE PREVENTED.
MAY GOD BLESS ONE.ORG.
May 7th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
David is inspiring to help you realize “ONE” does count !!! Remember -Get your VOICE heard whatever it is - politics,rights,-fight for what you beleive in-IT DOES COUNT .”U tube” is a great way to communicate the progress of “ONE” -I am horored to be part of it -keep it coming! short but to the point.

Just to inform those in charge, that I’m the same person as the U2 Email address. I, regretfully, had to change to this format due to having difficulties retrieving my ONE emails. I have been a member since 2005, and absolutely love staying informed and involved. That’s why it’s important to me to be able to receive these wonderful updates from Dave. God Bless all of you, and expect to hear more from me now that I’m able to receive my mail.

to express their desire to help alleviate world hunger. The message seems especially poingnant as we receive these reports from Myanmar tonight.

This is tremendous news. My son is currently serving in Djibouti and part of his mission is humanitarian. The conditions are horrific and he is in a “developed” area. Help us to keep the eyes of the nation and the decision makers on this. The election campaign is hiding all this so we will have to speak a little more loudly just to be heard.
Peace

Outstanding, I am very pleased to hear the proposed amount of money and assistance that President Bush is presenting to Congress. May you be well and safe as you continue on your calling.

David,
I am so happy to hear that ONE is accomplishing so much! I am proud to be a member of this organization and this campaign.
There is a line in a song that many people here shall recognize….. “One is the loneliest number there will ever be”…..
For the people this organization is helping to feed… one is a lonely number solely for them.. however with the help of this organization ONE is a wonderful and compassionate number now! Keep up the wonderful work you are doing and those of us here that are helping… to all of you… keep up the wonderful humanitarian work also! They need our help! As I have just stated it takes more then one lonely sole it takes all of us that form ONE! Bless each and every one of you and most of all bless the work of David Lane and ONE.org!!

Thank-you to David and All One volunteers for your dedication to this global issue. I for one am grateful to be a One member and encouraging others to be a One member, we will eradicate proverty standing with ONE voice. Seeing proverty first hand in Africa it is the cry of my heart in assisting in even the small ways in signing petitions and encouraging others to do so as well.
May all hear the cry of our hearts with compassionate ears, a gift to go, do to save the “least of these”.
Thank-you to ONE.ORG

Amazing! David, Thank you so much for realizing the ugency of this issue. I am a 6th grade middle school student and although I am young I hope I can take action along with everyone here. If you or anyone here has advice about what I can do to help around my school and get my classmates educated about this please respond to this. I have tried handing out flyers to ask my class to participate. Most of the time I find them on the floor. If you have any other ideas please tell me asap.
Thanks!

The work being done is commendable and truly a blessing for many but, when are we going to learn that the so called leaders of this world including and the Bush regime don’t give a dam about anyone except for themselves and their blood line. They have absolutely no regard for human life but their own. We are dealing in a very dark world ruled and controlled by very wicked and evil men. Why do you think we are going through all of this insanity and why there are organizations such as yourself? All of this has been manufactured and created by those in control and will continue until we really wake up to the real truth.
There will never be any peace until God is at the conference table.
Again the work you are doing is awesome, but none of this is ever going to change until we all wake up to the truth. As a matter of fact it is going to get worse and we in the good ole USA are going to get a major wake up call real soon. We are soon to wake up and think that we are in the twilight zone. The writing is on the wall. When are we going to read it?
Thank you.

They’re so dedicated to the campaign! And it’s good how they give us updates on what’s happening and what the G8 is doing to help etc this way we don’t just sign a petition and forget about it, we actually remember it and think about it.
May 9th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Thank you David & congratulation to all ONE members
May 9th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Well done all ONE members for signing the petition.I believe that we, coming from wealthier countries should help our brothers and sisters living in poverty in Africa, Asia and South America as much as we can. To think that children at a very young age are screaming for food and water in poverty stricken countries makes me feel that we must do whatever we can to help them. I’m very proud to be a part of the ONE movement. It must be sheer hell for those young children in poverty stricken countries. I believe we must do everything we can to help them and I know Jesus would be very proud of the good work the ONE movement and all it’s menbers, like all of you are doing. from Gordon, Australia
