A Victory! And a message from David

Aaron taped this video of ONE CEO David Lane talking to ONE members about the world food crisis and their recent victories. Watch to learn more.

You can also check out this post to see our petition delivery to the White House last week.

UPDATE: What David says:

Thanks for being a part of our hunger crisis campaign. Since I first wrote to you about this crisis three weeks ago, your response has been overwhelming and made this one of our most successful campaigns ever.

137,000 ONE members have signed our petition to President Bush, asking him to lead the G8 – a group of the world’s richest and most powerful countries – in taking action to alleviate the impact this crisis is having on people around the world.

Rising prices for staple foods and low crop yields for the world’s poorest farmers have created a silent tsunami that threatens to push 100 million people deeper into poverty.

The petition you signed asked for two things:

1. For the G8 to prioritize issues of global poverty, including the world hunger crisis, on the agenda of the G8 Summit this July in Japan.

2. And for President Bush to secure commitments at the G8 summit for additional resources for all types of food assistance and increased agricultural productivity in developing countries.

Last week, we delivered your petitions to the White House adding your voice to the growing call for action. I am pleased to be able to share with you some of the work that’s already being done to help end the hunger crisis.

Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda put the global hunger crisis on the agenda for the G8 summit, as part of a broad commitment to fighting global poverty. That is an important victory, because Japan is hosting this July’s G8 summit, where international commitments to fight poverty will be made.

In the United States, President Bush made an initial pledge of $200 million in American food assistance and followed that up last week with a call for Congress to approve $770 million in food assistance and investment in agricultural infrastructure in the developing world.

Getting the hunger crisis onto the G8’s poverty fighting agenda, and securing pledges of increased food assistance and investment in agricultural development adds up to a big win. It’s a testament to the power of grassroots action against even the toughest challenges global poverty presents.

Our next step is to secure commitments at the G8 Summit this summer and at other funding opportunities, for the fight against extreme poverty and global disease.

Thanks for adding your voice to the call for action to end the hunger crisis.

You, as a ONE member, drive everything we do. I look forward to continuing to work with you on this issue and many others in the months to come. Visit ONE.org to find out the latest.”

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the things that should be done to rectify neglected areas of concern. Yet if each of us pick ONE thing, and act on it, we’ve begun to accomplish that task. It all hangs together people.Issues of poverty, hunger, health and education. Work on at least ONE, and we will indeed see progress in our lifetimes. Indeed, by giving someone else time to have that life, we will have WON our victory. Keep the pressure on, that those to whom we give the power to act, actually do so. Do the right thing, and do it now.

    dear David,

thank you for the feedback on “our ” success so far thanks to your initiatives. I wanted to ask if you have helpful leads or contacts for me as i have just begun agricultural work in South Africa in the Transkei region in a small village to teach them how to grow more food in an effort to bulld some immunity and help slow the effects of HIV/AIDS, that affects at least 70% of the people there. I began simply and slowly as is necessary teaching llow cost fertilizer making , no-till planting and crop rotation. Now, building on this success i need to know what step 2,3,4 and so on is to progress toward our goals for the people. I am sure this is being done and has already been successfully done elsewhere in Africa even, so any help would be greatly appreciated especially by the people of this village, one of our goals is to get a successful model going, then duplicate it to other surrounding villages, teach the people so they become the teachers spreading the relief.
Thank you for your consideation and any assistance you may be able to share so i can pass it on and help feed some more and improve their lives sustainably.

    Reply to dave vandusen:

You might want to try the Earth Institute at Columbia University, here in the United States. They do a lot of work with Milliennium Promise, Millennium Villiage Project, which is exactly what you describe.
By using high yield seeds, fertilizers, and innovative irrigation techniques, they have proven that increases in producton can be realized. Even if your area isn’t chosen as a ‘villiage’, they should be able to point you in the right direction, since the research has already been done, and put into practical application.

I was watching TBN(Trinity Broadcast Network) one sunday, they were having their annual praise-a-thon and one of the pastors speaking stated that the #1 thing that God wanted to get rid of on the earth was poverty and it excited me to know that my desire is the same. Until that moment I didn’t realize that people really cared about those impacted by poverty and AIDS. I thought I was alone in my commitment and my passion. One mind and one heart waking up to the crisis of those in need and what they can do about it. Do your part to fight WORLD hunger by also fighting hunger at home. Donate or work at a local food shelter or soup kitchen. I challenge everyone to grow a small garden, and donate the entire harvest to the needy. Through a small garden we can help clean some carbon out of the atmosphere, and feed our sisters and brothers here at home; while making more food readily available for those abroad. “Whatever you do, you do to your self” has never been truer, as far as I understand its meaning.
David Lane has been blessed and has shared a vision that so many individuals can share with him.
David Lane’s e-mail message created an unexpected, but jubliant feelingt; and then It brought tears of joy to read the responses. I feel blessed and grateful everytime One gives caring individuals, like myself, an opportunity to share and give a “helping hand” through their actions. The World has needed and now has a “voice” where politicians can hear the cries of the needy, and the “hearts” of those who hear those cries and want to help. Thank you David Lane for such a “caring heart” and finding a way to connect so many hearts with yours! GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO CONTRIBUTE TO ONE!

    My ONE Pledge:
I am convinced that many of the challenges facing the poorest people of the world are at least exacerbated, if not caused, by the selfishness, consumerism, and gluttony of the people living in the G8 (the 8 wealthiest nations of the present world). To this extent – I am responsible. I cannot change the behavior of the people of the G8. I can however change my own behavior.
I have decided to adjust my lifestyle as to the luxuries of diet I enjoy in the US. I have decided to eat and drink in a way that, in my mind, approximates the way the poorest people of the world, once rescued by an air drop from the US or UK or Other wealthy nation, might. When we drop food supplies to these people we give them quality, basic, non-perishable items like water, soy, protein powders or drinks, pre-prepared grain based foods (similar to what we, in the US, might carry on a hike).
I am convinced that global warming, extreme poverty, and the unabated spread of curable disease are due, in large part, to our G8 gluttony.
Today (May 7, 2008) I have taken action to alter my ONE way of living as a global citizen. Today – I have cleaned out my cupboards, freezer, refrigerator, and counter tops. I have donated all of my regular food stuffs to others.
Beginning today I will eat and drink only the types of food items I have in my home. If I am away from home I will eat only similar items from elsewhere. The poorest of the world would likely consider themselves blessed to be able to choose from the items remaining in my home. Those items include (and my consumption will be limited to):
    1. Water
    2. Tea
    3. Soy Milk
    4. Protein Powder
    5. Protein Drinks
    6. Fruit Juice
    7. Vegetable Juice
    8. Protein Bars

I believe that, even with neither wealth nor popular platform, we can affect positive change ONE person at a time. With this belief in mind – I choose today – to eat and drink in this simple manner – until everyone in the world is rescued from the horrors of extreme poverty and disease.
To what near-term practical end? Living this way will substantially reduce what I spend each month on eating and drinking. I will plan to donate the difference to local and global efforts to feed those who are too poor to provide basic nutrition and clean water for themselves.
To what long-term practical end? The G8 nations have, within their collective control, the resources required to join together and end these horrors today. May my grandbabies know what it is to be citizens of a wealthy nation which has devoted itself and its resources to this end. May we one day actually choose to do so and then know what it is to live in a world entirely free from extreme poverty and curable disease. As ONE of the wealthiest people in the world, as “DAD”, as “Papa”, and as “Friend” – I accept this as my responsibility.

Mr. Lane, thank you for your diligence and hard work; as well as everyone else who works for ONE, and gives it a voice! Thank you for all the updates, as well. It is good to know that so many people care about the tragedies of extreme poverty and all its effects. It has been a lack of care – or not caring enough – that has made this such a catastrophe for so many, in the first place. Together, people can make a difference. It is great to get updates bearing news of successes because so many ONE members responded and gave the voiceless a voice in the Western world. Keep up the great work! And, hopefully, extreme poverty will soon be something in the history books, and far more people around the world will then be alive and have the health, food, income, and education to be able to read those history books. God bless!

I HOPE WE COULD ALSO FOCUS ON ENVIRONMENT.

MY HOME COUNTRY, THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS, WHERE MANY POOR FAMILIES LIVING UNDER $1 A DAY IS ESPECIALLY AFFECTED BY THE SOARING FOOD PRICES. AND ONE FACTOR ATTRIBUTABLE TO THIS IS THE RISING GAS PRICE. IF WE COULD ALSO ENCOURAGE OIL EXPORTING COUNTRIES TO CONTROL THE PRICE OF OIL, PERHAPS THE CHAIN REACTION IT CAUSES TO BASIC COMMODITIES COULD BE PREVENTED.

The work being done is commendable and truly a blessing for many but, when are we going to learn that the so called leaders of this world including and the Bush regime don’t give a dam about anyone except for themselves and their blood line. They have absolutely no regard for human life but their own. We are dealing in a very dark world ruled and controlled by very wicked and evil men. Why do you think we are going through all of this insanity and why there are organizations such as yourself? All of this has been manufactured and created by those in control and will continue until we really wake up to the real truth.
There will never be any peace until God is at the conference table.

Again the work you are doing is awesome, but none of this is ever going to change until we all wake up to the truth. As a matter of fact it is going to get worse and we in the good ole USA are going to get a major wake up call real soon. We are soon to wake up and think that we are in the twilight zone. The writing is on the wall. When are we going to read it?

    Thank you.

    Dear,
stunami incident had given us lession. There was commitment of the leader in area area to value that peace and reconciliation is critical. The former U.s president Bill Clinton then the peace envoy has more about what happen as efforts to reconstruction.Billions of dollar were pledged by donor but how much has been used actualy was another disaster.
I strongly argue the G8 summit leaders to Japan that commitments is different from pledges. We need actions and commitment ito be made meaning full. These leads should continue with the global responsilities to save lives.

The declaration stated neeo become obligation;137,000 ONE members have signed our petition to President Bush, asking him to lead the G8 – a group of the world’s richest and most powerful countries – in taking action to alleviate the impact this crisis is having on people around the world.

    Thank you sincerely,

I grew up as a son of a Christian Development consultant who works with NGOs and POs in alleviating poverty in Africa and Asia. Here in the Philippines, World Hunger is manifested locally as higher food prices are driving the poor down. The work that ONE is doing is tremendously encouraging to me and a blessing to the world’s poor. I am currently working with the government in lowering carbon emissions in the country to prevent climate change/global warming. It is my hope that ONE can also collaborate with work against climate change and global warming, given that climate change/global warming could possibly create extreme problems in agriculture, marine life, and fresh water ecology that will then again result to drive World Hunger up, in unimaginable ways. I know for a fact that there are environmentalists out there that are already blinded by their environmental work. But there are still a number of environmentalists that are genuinely concern about environmental disasters that will affect the poor even worse than where we are now. God bless!

David*s speech is very timely and I feel that the rest of the world will learn enormously from it by not puttting food production resources into production of mechanic fuel. It is regretable to see soya beans used in the production of epensive fuel for engines. I these people ask themselves one question *can a driver live on engine fuel? African countries are suffering rom food shortages, and if some advanced countries have this excess, please, let them donate to these poor states. I will devote much of my time to give regular ideas on methods of salvaging the food crisis in some countries in Africa like Cameroon….

I know Africa very well and in my opinion it is NOT ABOUT MONEY !.
The suffering Africans need WISE and RELIABLE GOVERNMENTS.
If these governments would accept the EXPERIENCE and the help of EX- SECRETARIES OF STATES of f.i. Europe and the U.S.A. than there is hope.

    Also INDUSTRIALIZATION is the answer.

At the end ; AFRICA HAS TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS !

Please, I wish to express my gratitude to you for your tremendous efforts and achievements in try to change the live of Africans, most especially in Nigeria. But, your Projects are mostly one-sided considering the fact that it doesn’t reach the poor man at the grassroot.

I came from one typical village in Plateau State in Central Nigeria. These villages have been so long been marginalized since when the Missionaries left Nigeria. If you are opportune to visit these communities today you will weep because there is no portable water, no health facility, no access road, no electricity, the Local Government, State, and Federal Government have neglected these communities due to corruption. The communities are Maijuju, Nabar, Reseh, Zigam, Zandi, Nakwang, and Dorong.

Therefore, I solicit for your support if your projects could be extended to these communities so that they could be carried along. No any NGO have ever visited these villages for any project, and our youths instead of staying at these villages, they are running to town in search of greener pasture. To that effect, the Agriculture has been neglected and if nothing is done before the year 2009, the members of these communities will starve to death.

I want to challenge the “ONE MEMBERS” to come to our aid and see to our problems and possibly address them.

    Thank you.

We are supposed to arrive there on June 5th, unfortunately us you all know, we have been undergoing a very difficult financial times owing to the Post Election Violence and currently our organization is not in a position to sponsor anyone of us for this trip

there is enough for all… it just takes sharing the resources of the planet and managing them wisely. The more we cooperate the less suffering there will be in the world. An end of suffering and poverty will come when humanity realizes how to work together for the good of all and that true happiness comes from loving others as equally as we love ourselves.

I love that, it is a good development in the history of solution findings. Which will help us a long way to chase-away some terrible problems in terms of hunger strike that is rocking the world.

But to me, I discovered that what seems to be the greatest problem in this world that needs urgent solution is that:
(1.) The opened way to sucess in the wasteful life has brought about gridiness in the midst of our leaders to help solving the problems
(2.) Government refuses to finance the right people who are ready to farm for the supplus of food but they embezle the money for their own interest.
(3.) Money to be given at a lower rate interest to the farmers, will be given to their families, other at a higher rate of interest which can even cause depress to the ability of a farmer to perform very well.
(4.) We allow problems to live before finding solution in the humanitarian needs.
(5.) People die because it is too late for them to meet with the solution found(discovered).
    (6) And that we allow nepotisim, selfishness(self-interest) reign in our midst(Leaders) esp. in Africa.

    CONSEQUENCE
We had forgotten that what seems to be right to you today will be wrong to you tommorrow no matter your academic, financial and social quality.

This will brings about death rate if not crime(war).

I bless you good work David and all ONE’’s members all over the world. I appreciate all good suggestions and doings that can bring urgent solutions that will suit people’s lives in this humanly unorgnized world of theirs.

Dear president, I believe so much in America, especially if it comes to the individual opinion in the spirited(Blessed) land of America. So also I believe that the President has a long way to solve some problems rocking soem parts of the world, problems like:
(1.) Puting finla stop to the terrible war between Iraq and Quate
(2.) Removal of the soul of the number 1 terrorist of the world(Sadam)
(3.) Costant visits to solve the issues of sicknesses rocking some parts of Africa e.g Malaria, TB, AID/HIV epidemics.
(4.) Visit to elaborate some newly introduced democratic government in some African Countries e.g Nigeria etc.
(5.) Injecting proper channel of the spirit of goodwills to some leaders around the world.
(6.) Visit to ensure the whole world becomes one and a conducive environment for all in years to come(future).
(7.) Ensure that hunger strike becomes things of the past in all nations of the world.
(8.) Ensure that best and good education, shelter, clothing, innovations and conviniency becomes stable and come to exist in individual of the world.
(9.) Endure that the efficiencies of the terrorists in the world become inconviniencies, insufficiencies and difficulties for them against their plans day and night.
(10.) Campaigning stability and existence of peace, love, frienship, loyalty, transparency, law-abiding, responsiblitiy, self-humble, selfishless, self-reliance, self-employed, self-innovation, competency, self-productivity, integrity, accountability and realiablity, all these come to stay and exist among the people of the world.

I pray that God Almighty that had been leading you to do some other than the above will contiunue to help you in Jesus Name(Amen). I a Nigerian but I say a very big kudos to you for your effective contributions to the good lives acheived. And I said form the bottom of my heart “GOD BLESS AMERICA”

To the Glory of God, I must confess that you are doing something good in every level. I am impressed.

Let us come to thingk about it. I suggested that Farming, Industrialization and Self-employed can solve this problem.

But to me, I will not buy the idea of leaving Africa behind and that they should find solutions to their problems.

Because, one hand cannot lift load to head-level unless with the support of the second hand.

Let us join hand and do these things together. According one popular saying “when powers are joined together, they can cut through iron.

Thanks for your laudable and immeasurable efforts.

Thank you for your leadership and efforts in bringing the world’s need to the attention of others. We MUST work together to eliminate the ills of humanity, greed for power and possessions. The gifts that the Lord has given us (natural resources, intelligence, etc..) MUST be used for the welfare of all humanity. If we don’t learn to work together – we will all lose in the end.

We give money to Feed the Children. We also give to the homeless we see on the street. We don’t have a lot of money ourselves but we realize that we all brothers and sisters and we need to help those who are in need. Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Altertsons grocery stores have cards by the cashier that you can donate for $1.00, $3,00. & $5.00. We give 3 X $5.00. I talk to those in line with me about donating to those who are without. Sometimes people donate but generally they do not. How sad it is that people neglect to take the opportunity to make others happy. I would like to suggest that those who read this message give what they feel they can afford at the above stores. You will be glad you did. God Bless!

I just spent 2 week’s vacation in Namibia. Hotels were luxurious but the travel company I went with, SAGA, included visits to the townships outside the 2 main cities. This was excellent. We all saw how 90% of the people in this beautiful country live. Some of it was heartening but other parts were not so good. The people have nothing but they welcomed us and were polite even when starving. They share everything they have with their neighbours. We could all learn a lot from just experiencing the friendliness and respect those brave and beautiful people have for themselves and the world.

I will go back to Africa. I can help some people by just giving them some paper and pencils for their schools and by hugging and kissing the children who will hopefully live in a better place than at present.

I am in total support of the ANTI-HUNGER FINGHTING, for in my country we face a lot of ECONOMY WAR alongside with our day-to-day activities inluding midnight theft activities which had led some good and responsible citizens to untimely and premature death.

So how cna we now be looking at an issue we can resolve ourselve to continue killing us. Immagine, in our area there’s a saying that “what has no hands, mouth and leg(life) mustn’t be knowledgeable that human being” so what are we saying in essence, ONE.Org(David) should continue. By the reason of blood of Jesus Christ, I am wiht you in the Lord.

I keep giving thanks to God Almighty for this idea and insight. This really reminded me an instance in the Bible when people the earth wanted to build a tower to God. Am sure that was the only moment God Himself has expresses a little bit of fussy about His own created beings. He realized that nothing could stop them building the tower so He MIX-UP and Confuses their Language so that no one will understand each other. GOD IS GREAT AND ALL KNOWING. When ONE.org speaks with one voice miracle happen. Let us continue with this spirit to affect the world positively and generations will forever be grateful to us. God Bless Us All.
