Free Cone (Yester)day
April 30th, 2008 at 3:29 pm | posted by Virginia SimmonsWith an official new ONE ice flavor at Ben & Jerry’s, free cone day was a pretty big deal around here. Across the country, ONE staff and volunteers used the event to spread the word about the fight to end extreme poverty, sign up tons of new member - and okay- eat free ice cream.
Below, some great photos and a note from Matt Haber who organized a crew of volunteers down in South Florida.
Student leaders from the ONE chapter at Pines Charter School recruited volunteers and collected signatures for five hours after school at Ben Jerry’s for Free Cone Day. It was a great evening of fun, facts, and free ice cream as these hardworking kids spoke with entire families, young professionals, and even sailors in town for fleet week about extreme poverty across the world. There was a strong presence and a lot of interest in ONE by ice cream lovers.
This is a passionate bunch of young people who, along with their teacher Ms. De Pas, have built a high school ONE chapter with 150 members. You can check out more about these great kids on their chapter’s MySpace page.

Congratulations Florida ONE Supporters -very good job !
A few weeks ago (19-20 April), I staffed a ONE booth at the Austin Reggae Festival. This was my fifth year staffing an outreach booth at this festival on Africa. Every year I have seen a tremendously positive response to the booth - and to the message of ONE. This year the response to the ONE booth was heightened due to the recent “American Idol” shows which highlighted ONE. (Many people commented enthusiastically about the new EDUN LIVE ONE t-shirt that I was wearing because they had seen it worn on the show.)
By the end of the festival, I left the festival with slightly THREE HUNDRED more sign-ups for ONE - three hundred more people who will raise their voices in the movement to end AIDS and extreme poverty in the world! (I had some info on RED which I passed out at the booth also.)
I was elated (as I am for those of you in Florida) because I know how important each and every ONE of us are in our movement.
Every new person that becomes ONE ultimately will end up saving at least ONE life somewhere in Africa. And that’s what our movement is all about - saving the lives and futures of the world’s poorest people.
I wholeheartedly encourage all my fellow ONE members to take the initiative to find those outlets in your community where you can raise your voice for ONE - and hopefully bring new ONE members along with you!
ONE LOVE - debbie kreuser
