G8 to Discuss Global Hunger Crisis!
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 am | posted by Virginia SimmonsJapan’s Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who is chairing this year’s G8 meeting, wrote a letter to the heads of the G8 countries as well as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick stating that the soaring world food prices would be part of this year’s agenda.
You can read an outline of the letter.
It was copied to the World Food Programme Executive Director Josette Sheeran, Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Jacques Diouf, International Fund for Agricultural Development President Lennart Bage, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union Alpha Oumar Konare.
In the letter, Prime Minister Fukuda states:
“Soaring food prices are posing imminent and serious global challenges. Threat of hunger and malnutrition is increasing, and the high prices have also brought about social unrest.
As the Chair of the G8, I firmly believe that this issue must be a subject of our in-depth discussions with a strong sense of urgency at the Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July. I intend to consult with my G8 colleagues, so that the G8 could collectively send a robust message.

This is a great first step, It is important that we work on a global scale but if you want to change the world change yourself. I for one have decided that with next years garden I will be double the size and I will give away as much free food as I can. I will also take cuttings from my fruit trees and give them away as gifts to help do my part in adding food to the planet and try to minimize the amount taken by those around me, hopefully leaving a little more for everyone else.
Think of it as becoming a bit of a Johnny Apple Seed with fruits and vegetables. Why not do the same?To change the world, ONE only need change themselves!

Hey guys, I’ve created a facebook event to help publicize the petition signing (even more). If you have facebook, please join…it is an open event (see the link http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=15974185675&ref=nf).
Also, I was wondering if anyone knows if the presidents of the other G8 countries are being ask to make the global hunger crisis a priority and to secure resources for the fight against hunger? Because, if I am correct, the petition right now is only being addressed to President Bush.
If you know about initiatives like in other countries, let me know so that I can post on the facebook event…

And after the meeting, the worlds leaders enjoyed a 19 course dinner complete with wines imported from around the world. Until the folks that are actually hungry are allowed to make decisions, nothing will get accomplished.
