Thanks to TASO
April 8th, 2008 at 11:18 am | posted by Weldon KennedyThe difference that we can all make by advocating for programs like PEPFAR is best shown through the on the ground success stories. One of our favorites to highlight is The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Uganda.
TASO receives PEPFAR funding and is a perfect example of what communities can do to fight AIDS and start to work their way out of poverty if we simply provide a little assistance. In their own words:
Today TASO is the largest indigenous NGO providing HIV/AIDS services in Uganda and Africa, having supported over 150,000 directly since its inception. The organization has 11 service centers spread in Uganda, with now 13 “mini-TASOs” in other parts of the country that are outside TASO’s catchment area of 75Km from the nearest service center. A mini TASO is a public Health unit that provides TASO-like services. TASO has given 10,000 clients ARVs including 500 children since we rolled out Antiretroviral Therapy in June 2004.
Check out the TASO website to learn more about the great work that they are doing every day, and take a look at some pictures ONE staffers took when visiting TASO last month.

I appreciate the services of TASO to protect the nations from the Devil of AIDS. we will pray for the Organization.
I am Pastor T. Jeremiah from Hyderabad, INDIA, doing the ministry in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam among children and tribal. Helping and guiding the Children according to the word of God Proverbs 22:6. Helping the poor children, down trodden people and destitute women and speciallty concentrated on AIDs people, Malaria, Dengue fever through the Helping Hand Ministries (Regd no: 1503/04). We have seen exploitation, Hunger, Poverty, Illiteracy and lack of medical facilities, Innocence at its optimum levels.
We use to go to the remote tribal villages, conduct medical camps and medical awareness camps to Protect the tribal and children from the AIDs, Dengue fever, Malaria,Chicken Guinea fever. Thousands are dieing due to insufficient medical aid and not aware of AIDs, they are superstitious and most common diseases are Malnutrition, Dengue fever, Malaria fever, Chicken Guinea and other viral diseases. The nearest doctor will be miles away and hospitals are barely equipped.
I hubly request the TASO people to come forward to help these people, and I request the one group to come forward to help these people in India. There are manyAIDS people in India especially in tribal areas. If any organization send any medicien for the AIDs people we will be very great ful to them.
Yours in His Service

Thanks Weldon for posting this about TASO. They truly ARE some of the heroes of the AIDS pandemic in Africa.
Long before there was PEPFAR or the Global Fund or the ONE Campaign or any other organization/program designed to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa - there was TASO.
TASO sprung up from the grassroots and thus it has an integrity that is unsurpassed and thus, TASO is an organization that deserves our respect….and our support.
I appreciate our friends at ONE for once more highlighting the uniqueness and the central position that TASO plays in the history of the movement to end AIDS and poverty in Africa.

I thought at first when I received the request from Agnes Nyamayarwo that it was another rip-off asking for money or worse yet saying that my brother (I do not have one) had died and left me $50,000,000 which I could ship in a plain box for only $500. I am really glad I read the actual letter. Please count on my support. Also anyone relating to this project may contact me at my personal e-mail address (celindgren@panola.com). Over the past 8 years I have raised nearly one million dollars for similar projects. I am here to help.
Sincerely

Being an Indian I personally feel that TASO should Start its branch in India and South Africa, which are the countries having millions of people are affected annually.TASO and governments of both countries should join hands.

I must add something here to this lovely discussion and to the great show of support for TASO.
I must remind everyONE in this discussion that TASO is an INDIGENOUS Ugandan organization - not a worldwide ngo. It can NOT go into other countries to set up branches to help others with their needs as it does not have the funding to completely take care of the need for its assistance in Uganda.
I encourage others around the world to take a look at the very successful TASO model to build an indidgenous response to the AIDS crisis in your countries but please do not think that they can do much more than morally support your efforts.
I wish you all well in your endeavors to meet the needs of the people of your countries.
