ONE super volunteer Sammi Fredenburg of Seattle, Washington, arrived in DC today so that she can present at the Global Child Survival Act hearing on the Hill tomorrow. Senator Dodd and Former Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D., will also be speaking.

She walked by my desk just now so I insisted she had to wait while I got a photo. Above, Sammi poses with Josh Chernila who works both Internet and field for ONE.

Go Girl, My Diamond. May you sparkle for those in Africa who can’t speak up. I support you all the way.

While I hope that the hearings today go well for the passage of the Global Child Survival Act, I must temper these comments with ONE thought:

those of us in ONE, no matter who we are, should never think that we are “speaking up” for Africa.
Africans are well able to speak up for themselves – and they do.

The problem is – sometimes we don’t listen. We already think we know what is best for someone else.

Our role in ONE should be to SUPPORT AFRICANS in their quest for a better life. It is an effective strategy to have Mr. Frist, Sen Dodd and even Mrs. Fredenburg speak up in behalf of this legislation – but are there African people themselves as part of ONE at this hearing speaking on behalf of the Global Child Survival Act?

    If not, there should be.

Let us remember in ONE that we are NOT the experts – no matter how much we know the issues that affect Africa.

Those that suffer and, ultimately those that benefit, from legislatiion that we advocate for through ONE are the REAL exeperts – and I hope that we continue to EMPOWER THEIR VOICES so that we can all do as Bono has alluded to and disappear up our own arses.

Just some words of wisdom from someone who has been in movements to end extreme poverty in our world for thirty + years.

All the Best for the passage of this essential legislation.

ALWAYS FOREVER, ONE – debbie :)

You know Debbie K, you just can’t help yourself from replying, can you? Trying to discount Sammi and the awesome work she is doing. We can do without the constant reminders and “some words of wisdom from somebody who has been in movements to end extreme poverty in our world for thirty + years” on EVERY single post wherever you go.

Great Job Sammi! What an honor to share the platform with these people. I’m sure this is an extremely humbling experience for you, as well. Odd to find criticism in a place designed to showcase the progress and celebrate ONE’s contributions to the struggle in Africa. There will always be naysayers… Ignore them, they rarely have anything important to contribute. Besides, there are more important issues to focus on – particularly the hearing, and the message to be shared. Good Work! And we are proud of your efforts!

Looking forward to more positive work for ALL people. This is a global issue and we all should be working together. So cheers to everyone who works for positive changes — big and small in our world. Very excited to read how the hearing went. Fair play to ya Sammi:)

Sammi, you are a true hero to me – you work tirelessly for what you believe in, are aware of the facts to be able to refute nay-sayers and dont do it for the kudo’s or recognition. May your talks this week be productive and lead to more actions at all levels!
