They Heard Us

The 100,000 “Visit Africa” petitions have been delivered and we’ve heard back from the candidates.

After you check out the candidates’ responses, take a few minutes and write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Writing a letter to the editor is your chance to talk about the poverty-fighting successes highlighted on the recent presidential trip to Africa – successes ONE members have helped make possible – and our campaign urging the next president to visit Africa in his or her first term.

I am very impressed with One’s campaign to have the 2008 Presidential candidates make a commitment to visit Africa during their first term. By signing the petition you expect that the next President will save lives and build a better future for those affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. However, he cannot do it alone. I also have a campaign. As an American Citizen I challenge not only the future President but each and everyone of you to go and see for yourself the devastation of AIDS and extreme poverty that exists in the “majority” world. It is not up to the President alone to make a difference but it is up to all citizens of this great country in which we live to stop the injustice annd povety that is running rampant throughout the world. I ask you to sign the ONE petition but more importantly I ask that you make a committment and go. It is time for you to see global poverty and disease in Africa and then come home to make a difference.

    Hello fellow ONE member,
I appreciate Bono speaking out on behalf of the worlds poor and sick. Don’t forget that the number one question asked Obama was “Will you legalize marijuana?”. Think about the benefits that medical cannabis can have on the millions of suffering Africans. I am very disturbed when I hear that UN Police are using international aid money to persecute cannabis growers in Africa and destroy such an important beneficial crop. Bono has enormous influence on UN leaders, and some of the world’s most powerful people. Please don’t think for a moment that by removing cannabis the UN is in any way helping the poor people of Africa or any other continent. This is a grave injustice, and I’m sure the sick and dying Africans effected by such laws would agree. The cannabis plant can help to provide food, clothing, shelter, safe medicine, and eco-friendly fuel. If the One Campaign really wants to help the poor, we should let them grow hemp, and if we must get involved, help them succeed in taking advantage of the many benefits of the hemp industry.
I hope Bono keeps up the good work, and helps to stop the bad work.
    Thanx. www.nycamp.org
