Rationing Food Aid?

The World Food Program is holding talks to create rationing plans if the costs of agricultural commodities (like wheat, corn, rice and soybeans) keeps rising at their current rate.

From today’s FT piece:

Josette Sheeran, WFP executive director, told the Financial Times that the agency would look at “cutting the food rations or even the number or people reached” if donors did not provide more money.

“Our ability to reach people is going down just as the needs go up,” she said.

WFP officials hope the cuts can be avoided, but warned that the agency’s budget requirements were rising by several million dollars a week because of climbing food prices.

This is a very sad and ominous article, Virginia. Thank you so much for posting it here.

It is a cruel twist that for many of those in our world who can least afford to go without continued access to food, this may unfortunately be their future.

This great dichotomy between what is available in the “developed” world and what is available in the rest of the world should be enough to make those of us in ONE not only keep our elected politicians aware of how we feel on the issue of extreme poverty but to RENEW OUR EFFORTS to bring more people over to ONE so that our voices can become louder and stronger on their behalf.

To that end, I sent to the national ONE office two weeks ago two hundred new sign ups for ONE on our ONE petitions. I’m still waiting to see our numbers on the front page of the ONE site reflect these additional two hundred voices for ONE.

Take very good care of each other, dear friends at ONE. Blessings are always around. ~

ALWAYS LOVE, ONLY LOVE, ONE LOVE, debbie :)
