ONE Campaign Los Angeles Team Members joined others in the California desert on Tuesday, December 4th for the filming of a television ad as part of an initiative to make extreme poverty and global disease central issues in the 2008 primary election. “The ad will be broadcast to millions of people in early primary and caucus states like Iowa and New Hampshire and on cable channels across the country. Millions of Americans and the 15 presidential candidates will see it and be reminded of the power we have to end extreme poverty and global disease.”
Responding to an invitation to all ONE Members, we hoped we would be joining hundreds of LA ONE Supporters for this amazing opportunity to reach millions of people. Surprisingly, less than a dozen members of our team made the trek but the ones who did come were passionate & energetic and I feel like they felt like they were really participating in something special for ONE.
The premise of the ad is that ONE voice crying out is difficult to hear but if millions of voices cry out — those voices cannot be ignored. The images were so powerful that I was moved just watching it being filmed.
Any opportunity to raise our voices for the world’s most vulnerable, especially for the children, is an opportunity we must try to seize if we can. I do hope that in the future more of our team will realize how very important their own voice is. We were all standing around in the desert looking at each other, saying – “If only these were all members of ONE out here – imagine how different it would feel – how much more powerful it would be if all of the people here knew why they were here – what The ONE Campaign stands for – how much harder would they be crying out?” I myself was screaming to be heard. I am so thankful for the many opportunities the ONE Campaign has provided me with to raise my voice.

I had the extreme personal honor this month of being invited to a morning with Dr. David Beckmann, the President of Bread for the World. It was unexpected and I was delighted: I wouldn’t have missed it for anything. The big issue up for discussion was the Farm Bill. It’s time to raise awareness and mobilize for real change.
Before we got started, I asked Dr. Beckman’s assistant if I could pass around the ONE petition, and thank the good Lord, before I left I stuffed a fistful of ONE bands in my bag, too. After we circled the room with introductions, I was asked by Dr. Beckmann to please pass ONE bands around the room, and the a sign-up form for ONE. I’m so glad I didn’t have the embarrassment of not having any on me! Well, this is interesting: all but one person in the room was already signed up and getting the action items and emails. That is so cool!
Bread for the World is an original ONE partner. The early ONE volunteers in our regions are indebted to their offices for taking our calls during 2004 and 2005 prior to an interactive yahoo site with groups and regional leadership, training, and toolkits.
I was anticipating a large sanctuary-full of people. Instead, I found myself in a comfortable setting with about one dozen other active members of the anti-poverty movement. The interaction with Dr. Beckmann and among the local activists proved invaluable. The partnership with ONE was commended often for our participation in hunger and extreme poverty and campaigns, such as ONE Vote ’08.
The Farm Bill is anticipated to hit the floor of the Senate later this week or the beginning of next week. We have been encouraged to contact our senators and ask them to support the “FRESH” amendments to the Grassley/Dorgan amendment, that would cap commodity payments to $250,000 per household, and the Lugar/Lautenberg Amendment that broaden the agricultural safety net by making a free revenue insurance program available to all farmers, saving billions of dollars to be used for nutrition, conservation, the McGovern-Dole international school meals program and more.
As noted in a previous blog, we either need to act now or we will have to wait five more years until the Farm Bill is revisited again. This Bill also addresses non-domestic agricultural trade issues, and as we enter the holiday season, we indeed can use our voice on behalf of the extreme hunger, to truly “feed the world, let them know its Christmastime.”
Stay Close,
Sammi in Seattle =)

Throughout November 2007, ONE members sent tens of thousands of petitions to the presidential candidates asking them to go on the record with their plans to combat extreme poverty and global disease.
Now we have their replies - and we’ve put them into ONE Action’s brand new “On The Record”website.
Use the site to watch each of the candidates’ personal video responses to ONE members and their 50-word plans on:
* Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis;
* Eradicating malaria;
* Improving child and maternal health;
* Achieving universal primary education; and
* Cutting in half the number of people without clean water or enough food.
Then, use ONE Action’s “On The Record” tool to compare up to three candidates’ plans and send that comparison to your friends.
COMPARE THE CANDIDATES
You may have noticed that a few candidates haven’t sent in all of their materials yet. If you haven’t already, sign the petition and urge them to send in their plans.
SIGN THE ON THE RECORD PETITION
By getting every candidate to go on the record, we’ll be able to be smart voters as we head to the polls, and no matter whose elected in 2008, we’ll be able to hold the next president of the United States accountable to his or her plan.
(I’ll go ahead and post a bunch of their plans and videos next.)

We are now less than a month away to our Iowa Caucuses, Jan 3, 2008!
Iowa ONE members have had a strong presence in the presidential race and we are sure going to have a strong presence at the 2008 Iowa Caucuses! We have met the candidates, asked them many tough questions and added extreme poverty to the top of the priority list.
Now is the chance to put all that hard work into action! This is the beginning of the process of choosing who will lead the country and the fight against extreme poverty around the world! We are busy collecting the names of thousands of ONE members around Iowa who are “Committing to Caucus for ONE” by submitting the ONE plank to get added to their party’s platform.
We are currently sending out packets of information,T-shirts, bands, literature and stickers to any ONE member who “Commits to Caucus for ONE.”
If you are ready to commit please sign up online at:

Hi, my name is Danny Dwyer and I am a freshman at Southern New Hampshire University and a member of ONE.
Senator John McCain just visited my school with MTV and MySpace for a presidential dialogue on Monday. This was a time for him to answer questions we felt were important when choosing the next president of the United States. When I found out that he was coming I signed up to attend and wore my ONE shirt during the taping.
On the night of the show, I unfortunately was not able to ask my question about how John McCain planned to help fight global AIDS. But there was an upside to the night for me. During the break he stepped off stage and came right up to me, shook my hand and thanked me for coming to the event and supporting such a noble cause.
He told me that he hoped I would be able to talk about ONE because it was a topic he was very excited about. On his way out after the event he shook my hand again, but this time I noticed he was wearing a ONE bracelet. And even though I was unable to ask my question, I was shown many times on TV wearing my ONE T-shirt. This hopefully got the message out that global poverty is a serious priority to the youth of America and the next president, who ever it may be, needs to take a stand.

On Saturday, December 1st, World Vision, Pioneer High School and The Journey Church sponsored a day to make kits for AIDS caregivers. Hundreds of people showed up to help! We had over a dozen ONE volunteers show up from around the Bay Area. The event started with a continental breakfast followed by a presentation by The Journey Church and World Vision Leaders. We saw a short film about a caregiver and how much she appreciated having a kit to use in her work. I really admire the compassion and selfless acts that caregivers provide their friends, family or neighbors who are sick with HIV/AIDS.
Each of the orange kits includes items like soap, wash cloths, gloves, flashlights and batteries. Every kit is also packed with a personal note from the person who put it together. We helped assemble 1,000 kits that will be sent to a country in Africa. To learn more about World Vision’s Caregiver Kit program and to see about hosting an event of your own go here .

Big news emerged last week of exploding enrollments in primary schools across the globe. 41 million more kids were enrolled in primary school between 1999 and 2005, according to UNESCO’s recently released Global Monitoring Report.
The annual report, which tracks global progress towards achieving Education for All, found that sub-Saharan Africa has seen some of the most marked improvements in expanding access to education. 29 million more African kids were enrolled in school between 1999 and 2005, the world’s fastest increase in enrollment.
A lot of this progress was made possible due to increased spending on education by African governments and international donors. With savings from debt relief, for example, many governments were able to abolish primary school fees, which allowed huge numbers of kids to go to school for the first time. Such measures led to an additional 1 million children in school in Kenya and 3 million more children in school in Tanzania since 2003.
While these numbers are encouraging, much more progress is needed to achieve Universal Primary Education and meet the second Millennium Development Goal by 2015. Although Africa has made impressive increases in enrollment, 33 million primary school-aged kids are still out of school, 54% of whom are girls. Dropout rates are also high across the region - fewer than half of pupils reach the last grade of primary school in Benin, Chad, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Rwanda and Uganda. Another challenge for African governments is to make sure that the number of teachers, classrooms and textbooks increase to accommodate the growing number of students.

On Friday, I went to a Chamber of Commerce Lunch, with some ONE members, to see Gov. Mike Huckabee.
There was a lot of press at this event, and ONE’s Marine, Michael Castaldo was able to talk with and band CNN anchor Anderson Cooper right before Gov. Huckabee gave a short speech.
After the event, ONE members Michael and Kevin tried to make their way to speak with Gov. Huckabee about ONE and the world’s poorest people, but the press crowd was too big. But right as Gov. Huckabee exited the room, Michael and Kevin were able to briefly engage with him. Michael told him that both Republicans and Democrats were coming together to fight global AIDS, and as soon as Gov. Huckabee saw Michael’s shirt, he told him that our issues are bigger than just Republicans and Democrats and that fighting global AIDS transcends politics and speaks to our humanity.
They were both able to thank him for his endorsement of PEPFAR as he made his way out the door. We would have had the entire engagement on tape, but someone forgot to hit the “record” button! I snapped a quick photo and I am sure that Gov. Huckabee ran into a few more ONE members urging him to become a leader in the fight against global disease and extreme poverty throughout his trip through NH.
