A NH ONE volunteer asked Mitt Romney:

“77 million kids in the developing world aren’t enrolled in primary education. Either they don’t go to school or sometimes they end up being educated in madrassas. As president, what would you do to make sure those kids are enrolled in primary education?”

His reply is in this clip:

When are people going to realize that jihad is consistent with the koran. If you read the koran, you’ll notice that it says more about killing non-believers than it does about peace and tolerance. The same goes for the old testament of the bible.

These texts are not the source of our ethics. Many of our ethics (eg: do not kill one another) predate the bible. And a lot of our modern-day ethics (eg: tolerance) are in spite of the bible.

I don’t understand why ‘moderate’ christians and muslims think it’s appropriate to accept portions of “the inspired word of god” but then reject others (like killing non-believers).

It is possible to live a full and ethical life without adhering to outdated texts inconsistent with what we now know of the world.
