Last week we had the chance to speak to students at Canyon Springs High School about ONE Vote ’08. We spoke primarily to high school seniors, and talked about the great opportunity they have to vote for the first time in their lives in the upcoming 2008 presidential elections.

We also talked to them about the ONE Campaign and our presidential platform. 364 students joined together as ONE voice and signed their names to a letter we will deliver to each presidential candidate when they are campaigning in Nevada.

In part, the letter read:

“We believe that it is within our generation’s ability to achieve these goals and ask that you commit to:

  • Reduce by half the number of people in the world who suffer from hunger and live in extreme poverty
  • Provide free access to primary education for 77 million out-of-school children with a special emphasis on girls
  • Improve the living conditions of vulnerable populations by, for example, providing access to clean water to an additional 600 million people and basic sanitation to 1.3 billion.
  • Prevent more than 6 million young children from dying each year from poverty-related illnesses and 400,000 women from dying in childbirth each year.
  • Save 16,000 lives a day by fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, three of the world’s most devastating diseases.

As you campaign here in Nevada, and elsewhere, we hope you will speak out about these import issues. You have the unprecedented and unique opportunity to provide hope and opportunity to the one billion people who live on less than a dollar a day and make the fight against global disease and extreme poverty a top foreign policy priority of the United States.”

100_2494Amy Schlauder took a break from her busy schedule as a student and volley ball player at BYU to come home to Vegas and talk to the students about her experience in Zambia over the summer.

The students were truly moved by her personal experience and pictures, as she sought to battle the devastating effects of extreme poverty in Africa every day during her time there.

This is exciting to see a specific list of goals presented to all candidates. But just as the MDG’s have a goal-date (2015), so should some kind of goal time-lines be included here. If not, those in office could always “be working toward them”, while pouring money elsewhere such as into a war or cleaning up enviromental messes that should be requiring less federal monies because they are being more efficiently managed. Thank you, ONE, for all you do and are accomplishing. I do understand goal time-lines would have to be flexible and non-threatening. I just feel some sort of guideline should be in place as this ’08 race heats up and ONE puts itself out there for world peace and plenty.
