Studies in monkeys suggest that an HIV drug tenofovir currently used in drug cocktails could also potentially keep a healthy animal or person from becoming infected with HIV. Through simulation models, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Imperial College London used simulation models to demonstrate that, when properly rolled out, the drug could prevent as many as 3 million new HIV cases in Africa.
A number of factors could potentially hinder the strategy’s effectiveness. A false sense of invulnerability could lead to an increase in sexual activity and hence risk. Still, the prevention pill is a promising development in the push to halt and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS around the world.
