Richardson On Tape on Trade
September 11th, 2007 at 2:28 pm | posted by Virginia SimmonsBill Richardson spent the day campaigning in Las Vegas on Saturday. He made stops at the Cark County Democrats Club meeting and opened a new office in East Las Vegas.
During both events, Governor Richardson commented on the need to fight extreme poverty and global disease, and thanked The ONE Campaign for leading this fight and attending his office opening.
Megan Jones was able to ask Governor Richardson about how the trade agreements under his Marshall plan would help in the fight against global poverty. See his response in the video attached:

It’s good Richardson has made aid to Africa an issue in his campaign–he has something of a plan whereas no other candidate, with the exception of John Edwards, even has one. But this video was disheartening to a certain extent, what he said made no sense and it gave me the impression he will do little if anything if elected that works.
Stopping jobs from going overseas means stopping people overseas (the poor people) from getting those jobs. Some of the ONE t-shirts are made overseas by Bono’s company for instance, which claims to be a big humanitarian effort by giving jobs to poor people in Lesotho. If we cut down on that we’d be cutting down on a way out of poverty. In effect Richardson was saying something AGAINST the ONE agenda and yet gets endorsed for it. It makes you wonder…

I was a little let down by that answer as well.
I’ve heard Richardson speak a few times about Darfur, AIDS, global poverty etc., and it was far better than that clip. He is quite knowledgeable on the issues and very supportive.
I think his mind was elsewhere.
