Senator John McCain is in New Hampshire right now and I caught up with him the other day at a town hall event in Merrimack. It is always a good thing to see ONE bands and ONE volunteers at all of the candidate events and this was no exception.
During the town hall meeting, Senator McCain responded to questions about the fight against global AIDS by talking about how much credit the Bush administration deserves for their efforts and how while money alone would not solve the AIDS pandemic…but it was a very important part of it. He even said how much he admires and respects Bono for his efforts to fight poverty and push for accountable and responsible debt relief plans for the poorest nations on Earth.
After the event, I was able to talk with the Senator with some ONE members. I thanked him for recognizing President Bush’s efforts to fight AIDS and poverty in Africa and told him how important it was for our country to act swiftly and effectively in this emergency. He agreed with me and I asked him to support New Hampshire’s own Sen. Sununu in his efforts to fully fund the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a new US effort that rewards countries that are fighting corruption and demonstrate transparency, with more and better US aid. He told me that he agreed and would sign onto the effort to help save and properly fund the MCC. Sen. McCain seemed very excited and thanked us for our own enthusiasm with ONE.
And it would not be a candidate engagement without a great photo of Michael and the Senator with a ONE shirt!
All over America, people are turning to ONE Vote ’08 to help save lives and make a better and safer world for everyone. We can beat global AIDS and end world hunger. You do not have to belong to a certain party or ideology…you just have to care and lend your voice to ONE Vote ’08 and the world’s poorest people.
