claudia_richardsonThis week, Juliet Reid and I attended the New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson’s Presidential “Job Interview” at the University of Iowa campus. After a brief speech outlining his qualifications, Gov. Richardson took questions from the audience. When asked about the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa, Gov. Richardson stated that the US, needs to become part of an international community that deals with these issues and that the U.S. can’t afford to NOT give more in development aid.

He mentioned that entrepreneurial initiatives would be one way to help Africa help themselves. He also mentioned ONE co-founder Bono, saying:

“You know why Bono is so popular? Bono went around and told countries how we are saddling all these [less developed] countries with debt. He
said ‘Lets forgive the debt and help with creating infrastructure and help them.’ This is the way to go.”

He also commented that increasing accessibility to generic drugs would be something that would help African nations combat the spread of HIV/AIDS.

We were happy to see that several of his staff members were wearing ONE bands, and they helped so that we got to talk to the Governor about ONE
and hand him a band. The Governor was happy to see us there in our ONE shirts, discussing the issues and graciously posed for a photo.

Dear Claudia: We are so happy to see that our governor’s campaign staff is wearing the ONE bands. His campaign put out a great press release endorsing The ONE Campaign. http://breadnm.blogspot.com/2007/07/you-go-guv.html Did you by chance get a photo of Gov. Richardson with the white band? We would like to add it to a Facebook group called Who is Wearing the White ONE band. If not, can we borrow the photo from this blog for the group? (He’s almost wearing the band). Hi Claudia, great article. I am a big supporter of Governor Richardson, in part because of his committment to focus America’s attention on the struggles of Africa, including the HIV/AIDS crisis and the worsening situtation in Darfur. I believe it is essential that we elect Governor Richardson President, and am doing everything I can to that end.

ONE is a great organization, if you would email me some particulars I would love to be a part of this incredible movement!
