The Heart of the Heartland

By Libby Pederson, Iowa ONE Vote State Director

On Tuesday, Dr. Norman E. Borlaug received the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony with President Bush and congressional leadership from both parties. As a fellow Iowan, I take special pride in Dr. Borlaug’s honor, and I see the state’s ONE Vote ‘08 campaign as continuing in the tradition he laid before us.

Frank Swoboda, a ONE member who works for the World Food Prize, a foundation founded by Dr. Borlaug, also wanted to express his respect for the honoree and the motivation he draws from Borlaug:

“He is proof that one person can make a huge difference; he has shown that the battle to end hunger and fight poverty is one worth fighting because it is one that can be won. He is a great inspiration to all of us in the Iowa ONE Campaign, and we offer him our deepest congratulations from his home state!”
