You are posing with Mitt Romney as if he isn't calling for Guantanamo Bay to be doubled! Or is poverty the only thing you care for? What about the 3 million refugees we've created by the war in Iraq? The One campaign is institutionalized bullshit to make people feel as if they are good doers while they pose with politicians who order more bombs to drop on Iraq. Phonies.

While I am an avid ONE volunteer (since the start of ONE) and will continue to be an avid ONE volunteer until extreme poverty is no more, I do think that we need to seriously think about what she says.

Unless we want to be looked at as simply tools of the politicos who will promise ONE thing to us but then deliver another after the elections, I think we need to temper our whitebanding of politicians of any hue with a bit of discretion.

I cringe when I see some of our volunteers with these politicos and opportunists of every political philosophy. SIMPLY WEARING OUR WHITE BANDS DO NOT MAKE THEM ALL OUR FRIENDS!

Let's remember to be in their world - but not of it.

And yes - we are planning an event here in central Texas for International Whiteband Day in October (17) and yes - I will continue my activities for ONE (including whitebanding these politicos when they come through my area) but I AM UNDER NO ILLUSION. These politicos are our friends as long as they think that we will vote for them.

Think about it.

LOVE AND PEACE. HOPE AND JOY. MERCY AND GRACE.~

AS ONE, debbie :)

I find it hard to believe someone supports Romney, more or less an anti-ONE candidate, who talks about fiscal conservativism, cutting the budget, and an aggressive neo-con foreign policy, can support ONE. It's a sad truth, I guess, that despite ONE's theoretical focus on the issues, most ONE members have no idea what candidates actually support ONE. And millions of people could die because of it.

I wrote a few weeks ago, in a comment on this blog, that we need to be more aggressive in getting promises from candidates. Right now ONE is focusing on getting attention, which is a start. But now all the candidates know about ONE--so it's time to start talking about the issues.

The farm bill is not going to come out how we want. Sen.s Dodd, Obama, and Brownback, for instances, are not fighting for us. Why are we giving them photo ops and praise on the campaign trail?

The only candidate that has come out with a serious plan and given serious attention to ONE's issues is former Sen. Edwards, yet he is hardly ever featured on this blog.

I'm just going to pray that in the long run, by begging any and all candidates, to listen that we get results. Because, to be honest, I'm skeptical that handing out photo-ops will change Mitt's mind.

I couldn't agree more with your statements. I just hope that the national leadership that ONE currently has is listening...and looking for ways to refine their approaches to these politicians.

The time for commitments from the Presidential candidates on global poverty is NOW - not later.

I just don't want all the sincere efforts of ONE volunteers to go up in a poof of smoke because we failed to get these politicians to MAKE A COMMITMENT TO ONE during this Presidential race.

I don't want us to forget we are all in this movement to make extreme poverty history for the future of the People of Africa.~

Take very good care, my friends. Blessings - not just for those who kneel.

ALWAYS ONE in the Spirit, debbie :)
