Today, Americans across the country are urging their representatives to fight extreme poverty by co-sponsoring the Global Poverty Act (HR 1302).

The Act, introduced by Representatives Adam Smith (D-WA) and Spencer Bachus (R-AL), declares poverty alleviation an official U.S. policy.

Specifically the bill directs the administration to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to vastly reduce global poverty, those living on less than $2 per day, and to eliminate extreme poverty, those living on less than $1 per day.

Below, we’ve made of list of key representatives whose support we need to pass this bill through committee. If you see your representative’s name, please call him or her now!

If your representative’s name isn’t on the list, this bill still needs all the support it can get. Please call your representative now through the Hill’s switchboard at 202-224-3121.

Sample talking points:

- Hi, I am from [location]. As a constituent and member of the ONE campaign, I urge Representative [name] to co-sponsor the bipartisan Global Poverty Act – H.R. 1302

- I strongly believe that investing in the world’s most vulnerable people will help build a better, safer world for us all.

this is got to be one of my favorite house resolutions to date. Congressman Smith is a champion of many of the topics important to us, dealing with global and domestic policy issues, as well as locally here in the pacific northwest.

i wish him success with this resolution he’s worked hard on with his collegues, not only because he’s a great man and congressman, but because the incoming president would be required to develope a strategy to work harder toward benchmarks of the Millenium Development Goals, something we are sorely lacking right now. but more than a wish, it’s success is up to us now, to make sure it has the bilateral support it deserves to make it to the next level. it would still be a far cry from putting ONE and DATA staff and us volunteers out of a job, but a substantial step in the right direction.

    stay close,

There are no words to thank you, Virginia, for posting this about the Global Poverty Act.

The Global Poverty Act is ONE of the most important pieces of legislation to come before Congress regarding extreme poverty in many years.

If passed, this legislation has the potential to positively change the lives of millions of people around the world.

I can proudly say that my Congressman, Rep. Michael McCaul has FINALLY decided to support this legislation! I AM ELATED!

For four years now I have made my Spring and Fall visits to my Congressman’s district office in Austin to share with them my concerns for the world’s poorest people and to let them know of my support for FULL FUNDING of the programs that fight AIDS and extreme poverty around the world.

There have been many times that I felt that I wasn’t heard, wasn’t listened to in that office but I am elated to say that maybe all the info that I left them about ONE, PEPFAR, MCA, the Global Fund, etc. actually DID get through to them!

In this lobbying effort, my main cohorts have been the relentless team of RESULTS volunteers who never stop making those Congressional phone calls, faxes, emails and office visits to make sure that their voices are heard on the issues of extreme poverty and global health.

We are in a new era down here in central Texas. We have a REAL CHANCE to become ONE of the beacons of light for ONE and our movement to end extreme poverty here in the South.

I hope that ONE will see the validity of helping us down here to showcase how the South CAN SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT TO END EXTREME POVERTY and use us as an organizing example to show other Southern states that the TIME HAS COME FOR ONE IN THE DEEP SOUTH!

Take very good care of each other, everyONE. Blessings abound – just look around.~

ALWAYS ONE in the Spirit, debbie :)

I understand the U.N. will be handling the funds. Wow! Gives me confidence our U.S. tax dollars are being handled well. I hope there is not another “oil for food” disaster. Where is the oversight? How many corrupt government officials will get their hands on the money.
I think this plan will drain the U.S. dry. Open your eyes, there are many overseas charities to support. Why this big money grab?
If it is so wonderful, why is it’s passage and information so secretive and hurried? Has it been discussed honestly in the main stream media?
