Water, justice, and an Illinois legend

Ever since I knew what a senator was, Paul Simon was mine. A great public servant for Illinois and the nation, he will always hold a place in my heart as one of my favorite politicians, plus he wore a bow-tie just like my dad….

I’m a little awed about the fact that this Friday, there will be an event in Chicago that honors the legacy of Senator Paul Simon by drawing attention to the 1 billion people in this world that live without access to clean water – a problem that results in a child dying every 15 seconds from preventable disease.

Senator Paul Simon dedicated much energy to draw attention to the growing water shortage, both domestically and overseas. In 2005, to honor this memory, Congress passed and President Bush signed the “Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act” to make clean water and sanitation programs a priority in US development policy. Unfortunately, funding for this bill is being threatened.

Safe drinking water and adequate sanitation are a precursor to improving health, education and overall prosperity so join ONE and World Vision members in Chicago on Friday, May 18, 5:30 pm in Federal Plaza to draw attention to this growing threat and advocate for increased funding for water and sanitation programs in our federal budget – and honor an Illinois legend in the process.
