Alix Aces Meeting With Rep. Ros-Lehtinen’s Office

Hi! I’m Alix Gordon, a member of the ONE Campaign in Miami, Florida. I just lobbied for the first time by leading ONE, CARE and UNA (United Nations Association) representatives meeting with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen’s Legislative Assistant Ariel Fernandez. The meeting was devoted to several important issues, including the Growth Act and international affairs budget.

 

Congresswoman RosLehtinen was a co-sponsor of the Act in 2006, which empowers woman living in extreme poverty by removing barriers that prevent them from obtaining land and property rights. We were able to hand deliver more than 100 letters written by ONE members who live in the congresswoman’s district in support of the Act. Mr. Fernandez was impressed with the letters, and by learning that there are more than 140,000 ONE members in the state of Florida, and more than 7,000 ONE members in the Congresswoman’s district.

Last, but not least, we asked Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen to support $39.8 billion for the 2008 international affairs budget.

Talk about empowering. This action felt like one of the most effective things I’ve ever done to help end extreme poverty.
