Seattle Members Lobby McDermott

On Wednesday, Washington state ONE members Sammi Fredenburg, Steve Reynolds and I met with Representative Jim McDermott. None of us had lobbied a congressman on behalf of ONE before, and it was kind of cool to realize that we were providing him with a real grassroots message on the importance Americans place on foreign assistance.

Congressman McDermott is a true champion on of our issues, having worked and lived in developing countries. During the meeting, he asked us the figure for the House international affairs budget allocation resolution. We weren’t certain of the figure at the time, so we’d told him we’d get back to him. (It actually worked out fine that we didn’t know during the meeting, because this gives us a perfect opportunity to follow up with his office.)

After presenting Representative McDermott with “On the Move,” Bono’s 2005 White House Prayer Breakfast Speech in book form, an informational handout and a ONE band (which he says his wife already wears), we snapped a few photos. We went home feeling good that we had taken the time to let our congressman know that we count on him for leadership in the House on these issues.

Next we moved onto the Senate side…
