Double Whammy Lobby Visits

Yesterday, I went on two lobby visits with a dynamite and determined ONE Campaign
volunteer, Laura. Given her personal and professional responsibilities,
I was impressed that she was willing to commute over an hour to the
meetings and stick around for several hours. However, she’s passionate
about providing education to children -particularly girls – and she
really drove her point home to both of the staffers we met.

Our first meeting was with Congressman Van Hollen’s Appropriations LA
who was not only receptive to our message but very helpful. He provided
us with the names of other people who we should speak to in DC and in
his district. Laura and I are already strategizing about ways to build
the campaign in Maryland’s district 8!

When we left our first meeting, we saw that Congressman Hoyer’s office
was right next door. We’ve been trying to get a meeting with the House
Majority Leader or his staff for quite some time, so we dropped in to
follow up in person. We told them about ONE, handed them a copy of “On
the Move” and thanked them for their time. I didn’t think that we’d
hear from anyone, but we found out today that our efforts were not in
vain! I actually got an email from one of Congressman Hoyer’s staffers
saying that she would like to meet with ONE Campaign members!

Our second meeting was with a senior legislative assistant in Senator
Cardin’s office whose focus is International Affairs. We were excited
to learn that he had worked for three of ONE’s partners and had worked
in Africa. The meeting didn’t last long, but he assured us that he
would recommend to Senator Cardin that he sign the 302(b) letter urging
a full $39.8 billion for the International Affairs Budget.

All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience or outcome –
and we can’t wait to return for that third meeting!
