Kim and Seth are talking about how to be effective advocates.
The first levels of advocacy are fairly simple; taking the actions in the ONE e-mails that you receive. Sending an e-mail, fax, or making a phone call really does have an impact, especially when millions of us to it together.
Kim is talking about the next step, which is not just hitting “send,” but making phone calls. On a recent phone action one of her volunteers dialed her senator’s office, but hung up before saying a word because she was so nervous. After Kim talked her through it she had the confidence that she needed and she made the calls. It’s calls like the those that helped us win back the $2.2 billion for the international affairs budget.
Now Seth is stepping up to talk about organizing in the field.
He is telling a story about meeting with a member of Congress. At the meeting the congressman told Seth that he had received 5 handwritten letters from constituents, and that he still has those letters to this day. It just goes to show you that taking that extra moment can have a big impact.
Seth is also talking about organizing faith communities. He is now telling a story about a young girl who wrote him a letter which he now has framed. The letter says, “I hope everyone can live.” Seth reminds us that this is a simple prayer that we can all make, “Dear G-d, I hope that everyone can live.” Such a simple and profound message to unite a faith community as ONE.
