Recently, the World Health Organization published its annual AIDS report. With statistics, charts and maps, this yearly updates estimates the scope of the epidemic and the importance of our fight.
Some facts from the report:
In 2006, 2.9 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses.
Almost three quarters (72%) of all AIDS deaths took place in sub-Saharan Africa.
There are indications that infection rates in Eastern Europe and Central Asia have risen by more than 50% since 2004.
At the end of 2006, an estimated 39.5 million people were living with HIV.
