I believe education is fundamentally important to opening society's eyes to the truth in which we are living in. The word Poverty also needs to be examined. What does this mean? Am I poor for my lack of materialistic wealth? Am I poor because the image society gave us as children I was not able to succeed at? These problems are I know those of more developed nations (western civilizations), but these problems lead to life of crime, a life where ones disconnection from a society we have created has caused them to turn to alternative means on gaining wealth. Corrupt means even which tear away the very essence of our nature. I believe all humans are essentially good. If we maybe turned slightly away from the extreme competitiveness and incentive based society which we feel must be in tack for humans to continue to excel, and seek a world of compassion, and freedom to express oneself. Freedom for us to live the dream we so disire. Spend millions on rehabilitation centers rather then jails and convince those who have made it in business to see the light, the truth and that through there excellance we can strive as ONE unit to achieve this peace. No Man, Woman or Child should ever go hungery in any part of the world. Scarcity is only an illusion. We must find richness in ourselves, not through materialistic wealth but spiritual. We must all reflect on what is really important Love,Peace and Happiness or the all mighty doller.

Addendum: To Eliminate Poverty create a center of learning, through knowledge each person can find meaning in their own existence. Provide the neccessities of food, water and love. To All Willing!

Poverty is a necessity in order for the world to move forward. While no-one wants to be poor, or be deprived of things that people want or need, it is necessary. Please let me explain.
When someone has something, anything, and another person wants it, they may possibly purchase it. That item whatever it is now becomes a commodity. Thus, now the person that had it no longer has it and either needs to make more, manufacture more or be satisfied that they have something in exchange for it such as money or another item if it was traded. The person that bought it now has it, will consume it, use it, keep it or resell or rebarter for it. This is a simple example of comerce. Now, how does this relate to poverty, well, when someone wants something and they can not get it due to economics or lack of resources to get it, then effectively that individual is impoverished to get that item. Now, we can all agree that the lack of ability to get a nice purse or car is hard to compare to the lack of ability to get food for a day or shelter, but the principle is the same. Thus, based upon that, poverty is a necessity of society in our present form. As long as there is the desire to improve one’s self there will always be someone that has to be lower on the pole because that individual was not able to out-bid, or out pay someone else for the item that they needed. If we combine that principle with the effects of greed and desire, then this situation is compounded. As long as there will be greed in the world there will always be poverty.
So, to answer Bono’s question, in order for us to make poverty history, we as a society must eliminate greed. Unfortunately, this is impossible, because it is engrained in everyone to strive to be the best. To be the top, to do better, to have more, to do more for our family, and ourselves.
As much as I like Bono, I would have to say that his comment does nothing but stir the line of communication like this. It does nothing to resolve it as nothing can be done to resolve it. From a Micro to a macro economic climate nobody can eliminate greed unless we all agree to live in a Eutopian society. Then again, if we do live in that type of society, nothing would be done to improve human advancement in the world as there could not be any competition, or desire to succeed beyond anyone else. Thus, if that happened humans as we know it would cease to exist because something else would come along to dominate us, perhaps animals because they have greed in the sense that they will do whatever they need to do to survive, ie survival of the fittest.
Think about that next time you cut in front of someone when driving in a car, you had the greed to get ahead. Think about that the next time you don’t give that extra dime back when you received too much change back after buying your coffee…you again had greed. Think about that the next time you cheat ever so slightly at a game, you again had greed to win.
A comment of “what can we do to make poverty history” is lip service only and will never, nay….can never be resolved for as long as there is greed in the world in any slight way or form will always promote someone else to have “less” than we have because we want to be number one.
