Your recent Senate victory added hundreds of millions of dollars to the
budget to help beat global AIDS and extreme poverty! Now we’re ready to
shift focus to the House of Representatives.
THIS WEEK, the House Budget Committee sits down to determine what
priority the U.S. puts on fighting global AIDS and poverty.
Check the end of this blog to see if your Representative is on the House
Budget Committee and send an email asking him or her to support life-saving
funding!
They’ll be putting it to a vote and lives are at stake, so let’s keep up the
positive pressure and ask the House to support funding that will help fight
global AIDS, TB and malaria and save the lives of mothers and children around
the world!
Check out the Des Moines Register and the Quad-City Times to see what Iowans have been doing to encourage House Budget Committee Chairman, Jim Nussle, to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty.

Water is critical to our survival: it makes up 80% of our
bodies, covers ¾ of the earth, and is vital to growing food and preventing
disease. Yet one in every five is forced to live without it. More than 1
billion people - 20% of the world’s population - do not have access to even a
simple glass of water. According to the United Nations, 4,500 children die every
day due to lack of clean, safe drinking water.
Today, on World Water Day, take time to learn more about the
water crisis and how you can help. On
your way to the water fountain, as you step out of the shower, when you prepare
your family’s dinner, take a moment today to think about how your life would
change if you were forced to live without water.

The Santorum-Durbin amendment passed
unanimously by “voice vote.” Many amendments are handled this way when it is
clear the amendment will pass or fail. It saves time, avoiding a recorded
vote.
However, many Senators were crucial to
getting the amendment adopted, by either cosponsoring or lending their verbal
support. If your Senator appears below, please thank them for helping fight
global AIDS and extreme poverty! They are…
Alaska: Senator Lisa Murkowski
California: Senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara
Boxer
Florida: Senator Mel Martinez
Georgia: Senator Johnny Isakson
Illinois: Senator Richard Durbin (amendment
sponsor)
Indiana: Senator Richard Lugar
Maine: Senator Susan Collins
Maryland: Senator Paul Sarbanes
Massachusetts: Senator John Kerry
Michigan: Senator Debbie Stabenow
Minnesota: Senators Norm Coleman and Mark
Dayton
Missouri: Senator Jim Talent
Nebraska: Senator Chuck Hagel
Nevada: Senator Harry Reid
New
Hampshire: Senator John Sununu
New
Jersey: Senator Frank Lautenberg
New
York: Senator Hillary Clinton
North
Carolina: Senator Richard Burr
Oregon: Senator Gordon Smith
Pennsylvania: Senators Rick Santorum (amendment
sponsor) and Arlen Specter
Rhode
Island: Senator Lincoln Chafee
South
Dakota: Senator John Thune
Also,
Senators Mike DeWine (Ohio) and Patrick Leahy (Vermont) sponsored and passed an
amendment to ADD $77 million to the International Affairs account to support
global health programs for children. They also deserve thanks for this important
amendment!
Others still need to hear from you that
you want America to do more to
fight AIDS and poverty:
Louisiana: Senator Mary Landrieu, who passed an amendment to
CUT $77 million from International Affairs, the same part of the budget that
Senators Santorum and Durbin were trying to
increase.
Nevada: Senator John Ensign passed an amendment
to CUT $153 million from the International Affairs
account.
Oklahoma: Senator Tom Coburn initially blocked
passage of the amendment by voice vote.

Yesterday evening and early TODAY, the Senate passed both the
Santorum-Durbin and DeWine-Leahy Amendments. CLOSE TO 16,000 ONE
supporters called their Senators, asking them to support funding that
will help fight global AIDS, TB and malaria and save the lives of
mothers and children around the world - and it looks like our efforts
paid off!
It’s incredible to see what can be done when we all work together.
Senators Santorum, Durbin, DeWine and Leahy demonstrated true
leadership by reaching across political divides to do the right thing:
save lives. We should all celebrate this victory and feel proud for
coming together and working as ONE.

Right now,
Senators from different sides of the political aisle are working together to
help save lives. Senators Rick Santorum, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Dick Durbin, a Democrat from
Illinois, have proposed an amendment to ensure
America continues funding
the life-saving Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Senators Mike DeWine, a Republican from
Ohio, and Patrick
Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, have also introduced an
amendment - this one to increase funding by $70 million for efforts that help
save women and children’s lives.
Call 1-800-786-2663 today and ask your two Senators to
support funding that fights global AIDS and helps save children’s
lives!
The Global Fund works: 384,000 people have been placed
on life-extending treatment for AIDS, 7.7 million people now have bed nets to
protect pregnant women and children from malaria, and 7 million people have been
reached with HIV/AIDS prevention messages. Child survival and maternal health
funding will also make a real difference- providing basic and cost-effective
life-saving interventions like vaccines and medicines.
Make the difference and support these
vital amendments: call 1-800-786-2663 today.
Four Senators reaching across divides to
do something like this doesn’t happen too often- let’s get behind them and all
do OUR part now.

Big thanks to all who have sent in their ONE photos! Send your picture
wearing the whiteband to ONEpicture@data.org. I wanted to share
one of the emails we received from Xavier, age 9, New Jersey.

Xavier writes: I believe there shouldn’t be anyone, especially children
on our planet with out food, shelter and medicine for when they get
sick!
I saw Mr. Nelson Mandela on a TV commercial asking for our help to stop
poverty. I couldn’t stop thinking about all the babies starving.
I told my mother I really want to help with this campaign. Since then
we have emailed & talked to everyone we know in the world asking
for help.
You are number one in my book. Thank you for all you do.
Sincerely,
Xavier
